Chapter 8 - The Nursery in the Sun

The small nursery in the brownstone apartment slowly took shape over the next two weeks. There were no gilded cribs or imported antique furnishings like Eleanor had demanded at the mansion. Instead, Connor and Clara spent Saturday afternoon assembling a sturdy pine crib they had picked out together at a local craftsman's workshop.
Clara sat on the floor, surrounded by plush toys and soft cotton swaddles, watching Connor struggle playfully with an Allen wrench.
"The instruction booklet says screw B goes into slot four, but slot four seems to have an existential disagreement with screw B," Connor muttered, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead with his forearm.
Clara laughed softly, the sound bubbling up from a place that had felt dead and frozen for years. The bruise on her cheek had faded to a faint shadow, barely visible under natural light. "Let me see that, Mr. Executive. You can restructure a multi-million-dollar logistics network, but you’re defeated by Scandinavian pine?"
"Logistics involves moving objects; furniture involves keeping them still," Connor grinned, handing her the wrench. "It’s an entirely different discipline."
Clara expertly aligned the wooden peg and turned the wrench, securing the side rail in seconds. She looked up at him, her dark eyes shining with gentle affection. "There. Solid as a rock."
Connor reached out, catching her hand and pulling her gently toward him until she rested against his knee. "How are you doing, Clara? Really?"
Clara looked around the room—at the soft pale-blue walls, the simple white curtains fluttering in the breeze, and the hand-painted mobile of stars and clouds hanging above the crib.
"For three years, I woke up every morning wondering what mistake I would make that day," she whispered, her voice thick with quiet emotion. "I wondered if I spoke too loud, walked too fast, or held Leo incorrectly. Eleanor made me feel like an imposter in my own skin. But here... I woke up this morning, heard the birds outside, and I wasn't afraid. I haven't felt this kind of peace since before my parents passed."

Connor leaned down and kissed her softly, lingering with deep reverence. "You were never the imposter, Clara. She was. She wore wealth like armor to hide how hollow she was inside. You brought real life into my world, and I will spend the rest of my days making sure you never lose this peace again."
In the corner bassinet, Leo stirred, letting out a cheerful squeal as he grabbed his own tiny toes. Connor and Clara looked at their son, their laughter blending together in the sunlit room, building a home not out of dynasty, but out of devotion.
