Chapter 14 - The Breach

At seven-forty-five that evening, a driving thunderstorm swept across the city, mimicking the night Elena had walked out seventy-two hours earlier. Thunder rattled the stained-glass transom windows above the grand mansion entryway. The long black limousine carrying Julian and Victoria had departed fifteen minutes prior, sweeping down the gravel driveway toward the downtown gala.

In the shadows beside the service entrance, a figure slipped through the cellar doors. Elena moved silently through the familiar subterranean corridors of the mansion, avoiding the squeaking oak planks she had learned to identify during her seven years in the house. She carried no weapon—only the federal summons and the small brass key Arthur had left her.

She reached the second-floor landing unnoticed. The house was quiet, staffed only by two private security contractors stationed at the front gates and Martha in the distant kitchen. Elena pushed open the door to the nursery.

Leo was sitting on his bed fully dressed in his school uniform, clutching a battered silver pocket watch and a small brass cylinder he had retrieved from the library clock. When he saw Elena standing in the doorway, his eyes widened, and a ragged, choking sob escaped his lips.

"Mom," he whispered, throwing himself off the bed and crashing into her arms.

"I'm here, Leo. I'm right here," Elena whispered into his hair, holding him with a fierce, protective strength that shook them both. "Did you find the cylinder?"

Leo nodded against her shoulder, pulling the small brass tube from his pocket. "It was inside the clock, just like grandfather said. It has the six-digit override for the vault." He looked up, his young face pale with anxiety. "Where is Lily? Did Dad hurt her?"

"Lily is safe by the sea," Elena said, taking his hand. "And you are coming with us. We have to leave right now."

They stepped out onto the landing, moving swiftly toward the back staircase. But as they reached the head of the marble stairs overlooking the grand foyer, the massive crystal chandelier suddenly flared to life, casting blinding illumination across the marble floor.

At the bottom of the staircase stood Julian. He had removed his dinner jacket, his white shirt open at the collar, a cold, mocking smile playing across his lips. Flanking him were two private security guards and Victoria, holding a glass of champagne.

"You really are remarkably predictable, Elena," Julian said softly, his voice echoing off the limestone walls. "Did you truly think I would leave my own son unguarded when I knew you were desperate?"
