Chapter 5 - A Ghost from the Port

Elena slammed the metal box shut, shoving it under the bench as she stepped between Lily and the doorway, grabbing an iron wrench from the rack.
"Step back," she warned, raising the tool.
The figure in the doorway raised two scarred hands in surrender. He was tall, dressed in a faded canvas jacket, with graying hair pulled back at his neck. His face bore the weathered marks of long years spent on the docks, but his eyes were calm, assessing the weapon in her hands without alarm.
"Lower the wrench, Elena. If I wanted to hurt you, I wouldn't have waited thirty minutes outside while you walked the canal path."
Elena kept the tool level. "Who are you?"
"My name is Marcus Reed," the man said quietly, keeping his distance. "I worked with your father for twenty-two years. Arthur told me that if this unit was ever unlocked, it meant Julian Vance had finally finished what his father started."
Elena lowered the wrench an inch, her breath catching. "You knew my father was watching Julian?"
"Arthur wasn't just watching him; Arthur was trying to protect your mother's share of the maritime contracts," Marcus said, stepping inside and closing the corrugated door behind him to block the morning light. "Julian didn't marry you out of sentimental affection, Elena. Under the original corporate charter, thirty percent of the Vance shipping line reverted to Arthur’s heirs upon his passing. By marrying you, Julian consolidated the voting shares without having to pay out the trust. And once he had full administrative power, he began stripping your name from every operating asset."
Elena sank against the edge of the workbench, the cold reality settling into her bones. The lavish wedding, the diamond rings, the subtle discouragement from keeping her own bank accounts, the gentle insistence that she stay home with Lily—it was never love. It was an extended, bloodless corporate takeover.

"Why didn't my father tell me?" she whispered, staring down at her worn boots.
"Because Arthur knew what Julian was capable of," Marcus replied grimly. "Julian has the police chiefs on retainer and the municipal judges at his country club. Arthur wanted you to have an exit route when the illusion shattered. But you don't have much time. Victoria’s private investigators have already pulled security footage from the bus station." Marcus pointed to the street outside. "They’re sweeping the warehouse district right now."
