Chapter 9 - The Manufactured Lie

Elena tore open the envelope. The front page of the city’s leading morning daily featured a large, unflattering portrait of her, taken during a charity gala two years ago, juxtaposed against a photograph of the Vance mansion gates. The bold black headline read:
HEIRESS RUNS AMOK: ELENA VANCE DISAPPEARS WITH BILLIONAIRE'S DAUGHTER AMID EMBEZZLEMENT INQUIRY.
Her breath caught in her throat. The article was a masterpiece of character assassination. Quoting anonymous family representatives and high-ranking corporate spokespersons, the piece claimed that Elena had developed severe psychological instability, emptied private corporate trust accounts, and vanished into the night with young Lily, placing the child in imminent danger. A civil bench warrant had been issued for her detention, alongside a court-mandated custody transfer awarding sole temporary care to Julian Vance.
"Embezzlement," Elena whispered, her fingers trembling against the newsprint. "He's pinning the offshore hedge fund on me. He's making it look like I stole the money and fled the country to avoid arrest."
"It's worse than that," Sarah said, pouring hot water from her kettle into a clay teapot. "Julian isn't trying to bring you home, child. He's forcing you into a corner where you have to run across an international border. The moment you attempt to use a passport, federal agents take the child and remand you to an upstate psychiatric facility until the civil suits settle. By the time you get a trial date, Victoria will have adopted Lily, and Julian will have liquidated your mother's shipping shares to pay off his corporate creditors."
"He won't touch my daughter," Elena said, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper.
"Then stop running like a stray," Sarah countered, slamming her palm down on the rough wood. "Julian has money, influence, and the media in his pocket. But Arthur wasn't an idiot. He kept the primary audit logs of every ship Julian’s father docked in the municipal terminals between 2004 and 2012. Julian’s entire empire was funded by unregistered imports through dock four."
Elena looked up, her gaze locking with Sarah’s. "Where are the manifests?"
"They aren't here," Sarah said. "They're locked in the central port authority safe downtown. And there’s only one person alive who holds the security override code to that vault."

"Who?"
"Your stepson," Sarah murmured softly. "Leo."
