Chapter 10 - The Fall of the House of HayesThe turning point of the trial arrived on the fourth day, when the prosecution called a surprise witness: Thomas Hayes, Victoria’s younger brother and the Chief Compliance Officer of Hayes Capital.
Victoria gasped aloud as her brother took the oath. He looked pale, visibly pained by the familial betrayal, but resolute.
“Mr. Hayes,” ADA Chen began, “did you discover internal records regarding the proposed merger with Sterling Logistics?”
“I did,” Thomas answered, looking straight at the jury. “Six months prior to the incident at the hospital, Victoria and Julian opened an offshore holding company named Phoenix Maritime. They routed two million dollars of Sterling Logistics’ operating capital through fraudulent vendor invoices to fund the purchase of our debt instruments.”
The revelation sent shockwaves through the courtroom. Julian’s defense attorney buried his face in his hands. It was not merely aggressive business; it was outright embezzlement and interstate wire fraud.
“And did your sister ever discuss Clara Sterling’s pregnancy with you?” Chen asked.
Thomas swallowed hard, glancing briefly at his sister, whose face was contorted in fury. “Victoria told me... she said Clara’s pregnancy was an unexpected complication. She said if Clara refused to sign the proxy, they would create an environment of extreme stress to force her compliance before the child was born, knowing Clara would do anything to protect the baby.”
The jury was spellbound by the cold-blooded premeditation of the plot. Outside the courtroom doors, reporters were already filing breaking-news alerts. The corporate empire Victoria had sought to expand was crumbling around her ears in real time.
That evening, after court adjourned, Clara returned home to her modest suburban house. She found Raymond in the kitchen, carefully warming a bottle of milk for Leo.
“Hayes Capital’s stock dropped forty percent today,” Raymond said, handing Clara the warm bottle. “The board of directors has officially voted to liquidate their holdings in the shipping sector. The threat to Sterling Logistics is permanently extinguished.”

Clara took the bottle and sat in the rocking chair, cradling Leo against her heart. The baby drank hungrily, his bright hazel eyes gazing up at her with complete, unreserved trust.
“It’s not enough to defeat them in court, Raymond,” Clara said, gently stroking Leo’s soft hair. “Tomorrow, I take the stand again for closing arguments. I want this to be more than a victory against two corrupt individuals. I want it to be a blueprint for how we restore dignity to our community.”
