Chapter 6 - The UnravelingA stunned silence descended upon the boardroom, punctuated only by the low hum of the air circulation system. Eleanor Ward let out a soft, triumphant breath, while the other board members began whispering frantically among themselves.

Victoria stood up, her cold mask slipping into an expression of raw venom. “This is a legal farce. A trust cannot preemptively override executive authority without a judicial hearing! Julian, call security and have these intruders removed!”
“Security is currently assisting the State Police in the lobby, Victoria,” Marcus Vance announced with icy professionalism. He pulled a second folder from his briefcase and turned toward the board. “Two hours ago, a grand jury returned an indictment against Victoria Hayes and Julian Sterling. The charges include conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, illegal market manipulation, and first-degree aggravated assault.”
Julian stumbled back against his chair, his face losing all color. “Aggravated assault? That’s an absurd overreach! It was a domestic argument!”
“You let your partner step on your pregnant wife’s stomach to force an extortionate signature,” Eleanor Ward said, her voice dripping with disgust. “We have all seen the preliminary affidavits, Julian. You are a disgrace to Arthur’s memory.”
“It’s a lie!” Victoria hissed, clutching her designer bag, her eyes darting toward the exits. “Clara is unstable! She staged the entire incident!”
“The hospital’s medical cameras don’t lie, Victoria,” Clara said softly, her voice cutting through Victoria’s frantic denial. “Every word you said, every second you pressed your boot down on my child, was recorded in high definition. The audio is pristine. The public will hear every vile syllable by this evening’s news broadcast.”
Julian reached out toward Clara, his demeanor suddenly shifting into a grotesque display of pleading humility. “Clara... please. Think of our family. Think of our son. We can work this out privately. I was overwhelmed... Victoria manipulated me!”
Victoria turned on Julian like a viper. “You spineless coward! You begged me to find a way to take the company from her father before the old man even died!”
The door opened, and three uniformed state troopers entered, followed by detectives in plainclothes. The lead investigator, a solemn woman with a badge pinned to her lapel, stepped forward.
“Julian Sterling? Victoria Hayes? You are both under arrest. Step away from the table and put your hands behind your backs.”

As the handcuffs clicked shut around Julian’s wrists, he looked back at Clara, his eyes wide with disbelief and terror. “Clara! Tell them to stop! You’re destroying everything!”
Clara did not flinch. She watched him being led away, her gaze steady, mournful yet entirely resolved. “You destroyed yourself, Julian. I am simply clearing away the wreckage.”
