Chapter 8 - Broken AllegiancesJulian spent two months in county lockup before his family could post his multi-million-dollar bail. When he was finally released to house arrest, stripped of his passports and fitted with an electronic ankle monitor, he returned to an empty penthouse. His assets were frozen under court order, his corporate credit cards cancelled, and his circle of wealthy friends had evaporated overnight.

Desperate and increasingly erratic, Julian arranged a clandestine meeting with Victoria at her family’s secluded country estate, violating his bail terms.
The winter frost coated the manicured hedges as Julian stepped into Victoria’s vast, marble-floored conservatory. Victoria looked diminished; the scandal had taken an immense toll on her vanity. Her hair was unkempt, and she gripped a tumbler of scotch with trembling fingers.
“We need to coordinate our testimonies,” Julian said frantically, pacing the length of the glass room. “My lawyer says that if we present a united front—claim Clara had postpartum psychosis and threatened self-harm—we can create reasonable doubt about the physical altercation!”
Victoria looked at him with sheer revulsion. “Are you truly that blind, Julian? The hospital monitoring caught the angle of my heel. It caught your voice saying, ‘Calm down.’ There is no reasonable doubt. My father’s attorneys informed me this morning that Hayes Capital is turning state’s evidence. They are offering the prosecution every email, every ledger, and every text message you sent me planning the asset seizure.”
Julian froze, his breath catching in his throat. “What? You promised we were partners!”
“You were a useful tool to secure Arthur’s trust,” Victoria said, her voice brittle and dead. “You were an insecure, greedy middle manager who wanted to play CEO. Now you are radioactive waste. My lawyers are negotiating a plea agreement. I might serve three years at a minimum-security facility. You, however... you are the domestic abuser and the primary fiduciary conspirator. They want to put you away for fifteen.”
“You set me up!” Julian roared, lunging forward.
Two burly private security guards materialized from the hallway, instantly seizing Julian’s arms and forcing him back.

“Get out of my house, Julian,” Victoria whispered, turning her back to him. “And pray that Clara has more mercy than I do. Because you have nothing left.”
Cast out into the bitter cold, Julian stood by his leased sedan, shivering. For the first time in his privileged life, the towering walls of consequence were closing in, and there was no exit.
