Chapter 3 - An Ambush in Silk and Steel

By evening, the hospital administrative office had transformed from a bureaucratic room into an interrogation chamber. Elena sat across from Director Campbell, a man whose spine seemed permanently curved by deference to the hospital’s wealthy benefactors. Sitting to his left was Julian’s personal attorney, Arthur Vance—a distant cousin to Marcus who had traded his ethics for a penthouse suite thirty years prior.
"Elena," Campbell began, rubbing his temples, "we’ve received a very distressing formal notice from your husband’s legal representation regarding an incident at your residence this morning."
"An incident?" Elena repeated coldly.
"Brandishing a lethal weapon, severe emotional distress, threatening family members," Arthur Vance recited smoothly from a leather-bound folder. "Mr. Sterling is profoundly concerned for his wife’s welfare and that of their unborn child. We are requesting a temporary suspension of Mrs. Sterling’s clinical credentials pending a comprehensive psychological evaluation."
"This is retaliation," Elena said, her voice cutting cleanly through the legal jargon. "I recorded Julian and his mother plotting to strip me of parental rights through fraudulent claims of postpartum psychosis."
Arthur Vance didn't even flinch. "Unlawfully recorded audio obtained without two-party consent is inadmissible in civil proceedings in this jurisdiction, Mrs. Sterling. Furthermore, doctoring audio with artificial intelligence tools is shockingly easy these days. What is real, however, is a police report documenting violent behavior in the home."
The door flew open. Marcus walked in, still wearing his surgical scrubs, an unyielding glare fixed directly on Arthur.
"This is an administrative board matter, Dr. Vance," Campbell protested, sitting upright.
"This is harassment of a senior nursing supervisor on hospital property," Marcus countered, pulling up a chair beside Elena uninvited. "And Arthur, if you mention psychological evaluations, let’s talk about your client’s prescription history. Or perhaps the private settlement your firm quietly filed two years ago concerning Mr. Sterling's road rage altercation on Interstate 90?"
Arthur’s smug demeanor faltered for a microsecond. "That is unrelated and sealed."
"Everything is sealed until a judge reviews the welfare of an unborn child," Marcus replied smoothly. "Director Campbell, Nurse Sterling’s shift performance evaluations have been exemplary for seven consecutive quarters. If St. Jude places her on leave without verifiable clinical cause within twenty-four hours of an alleged domestic incident, the nursing union will file an immediate grievance with the Department of Labor by sunrise."
Campbell blanched. The hospital was already navigating delicate contract negotiations with the healthcare union; a public scandal involving an elite donor coercing administration would be disastrous.

"We will... reserve judgment," Campbell said quickly, clearing his throat. "Elena, take forty-eight hours of personal leave. Not disciplinary. Rest. Arthur, we will address your petition through standard HR channels."
Elena stood, refusing to let them see her legs shaking. She walked out with Marcus, knowing this was merely the first skirmish in a protracted war.
