Chapter 6 - Fracture Lines

The pressure escalated over the weekend. Elena’s debit cards were declined at the pharmacy when she went to refill her thyroid medication. Julian had systematically frozen every joint line of credit, citing "unauthorized dissipation of marital assets."

Simultaneously, the city's society pages published a short, venomous blind item: Prominent civic heir dealing with domestic heartbreak as new bride struggles with postpartum instability before arrival.

Elena read the article on her phone inside Clara's office, her teeth clamped tight. "They are manufacturing the public narrative before the baby is even born."

"Let them talk," Clara advised, unfazed. "Public opinion doesn't sign court orders; judges do. And right now, Julian made a tactical mistake."

Clara flipped her computer monitor around. "When he froze your access to living essentials—specifically prescription medications for your pregnancy—he violated the state's statutory emergency protections against financial abandonment. I just filed an emergency petition for temporary support and an ex parte protective order restricting Julian and his mother from coming within five hundred yards of you or St. Jude Hospital."

Before Elena could answer, her phone buzzed with an unknown number. Clara nodded for her to put it on speaker.

"Elena." Julian’s voice was stripped of charm, replaced by sheer venom. "You had a process server hand papers to my mother at the country club?"

"Julian, you cut off my access to my prenatal medicine," Elena said, her voice calm and controlled. "You leave me no choice."

"You think this lawyer from a strip mall is going to protect you? My family built this city! The judge assigned to this district attended my father's memorial service. You come back to the house, apologize to my mother, and sign the mediation agreement, or I swear to God, Elena, you will deliver that child in handcuffs."

"Are you finished?" Elena asked evenly.

A pause. "You will regret this."

"The call is recorded via court-authorized discovery monitoring, Mr. Sterling," Clara chimed in loudly toward the microphone. "Thank you for providing clear evidence of witness intimidation. See you in chambers on Thursday."

The line went dead with a furious click.

Elena let out a breath she felt she had been holding for days. For the first time since running from the kitchen, she didn't feel like a victim escaping a predator; she felt like an equal standing her ground.
