Chapter 5 - The Architect of Shadows

Clara Morales did not look like a corporate litigator. Her small brick-walled office in downtown was cluttered with stacks of paper, legal briefs, and dried lavender. When she shook Elena’s hand the following morning, her grip was firm, her brown eyes evaluating and acute.
"Audio recordings are tricky," Clara said, leaning back behind her worn mahogany desk after reviewing the materials. "Under state law, non-consensual recordings are generally inadmissible in family court. However, there are exceptions when the recording demonstrates the planning of a criminal act—specifically, conspiracy to file fraudulent medical filings."
"Can we use it?" Elena asked, fatigue darkening the circles beneath her eyes.
"Not directly as primary evidence yet," Clara answered honestly. "If we introduce it too early, their legal team will bury us under procedural motions and move to have it excluded, while using their media leverage to frame you as an unstable, paranoid spouse recording family intimacies."
Clara leaned forward, tapping a pen against an empty legal pad. "We don't fight them in their arena, Elena. They want this to be a divorce case where wealth dictates custody. We are going to make this a corporate integrity issue. Where does Julian keep his operational records?"
Elena hesitated, memory sparking. "Julian’s family runs the Sterling Medical Logistics Group. They handle statewide supply chains for hospital equipment."
"And your hospital is one of their clients?"
"Their biggest," Elena replied slowly. "A few months ago, Julian was furious over an internal audit at St. Jude. He asked me to access internal delivery logs to see which surgical trays were being flagged for quality control. I refused. That was the week his attitude toward me turned completely cold."
Clara’s eyes lit up with predatory intellect. "He didn't just want a compliant wife; he wanted an insider mole. When you refused to violate nursing compliance for his supply chain issues, you became a liability."

"Could that be why they wanted to declare me incompetent?" Elena gasped, the pieces clicking together with terrifying precision. "If I testified against his distribution contracts, any attorney would dismiss my statements as the ramblings of a medically discharged spouse."
"Now we have a defense," Clara said with a fierce, quiet smile. "Now we have a weapon."
