Chapter 11 - The Truth in the Blood

The surgery was ninety minutes of pure, unadulterated hell.

Elena screamed until her vocal cords gave out, her fingernails digging deep bloody crescents into Jack’s palms as Marcus worked with agonizing precision, cutting away necrotic tissue, flushing the infected cavity with saline, and placing sterile surgical drains along the perimeter of her skull.

Jack didn't blink. He didn't look away from her eyes for a single second, speaking to her in a steady, unbroken cadence, whispering memories of their first summer together, of the small cottage by the lake they had dreamed of buying, of a life free from the suffocating shadow of the Vance name.

By three in the morning, Elena had finally slipped into a deep, natural sleep induced by painkillers and exhaustion. Her breathing had stabilized. The monitor showed a steady, reassuring heartbeat of 78 beats per minute.

Marcus stepped away from the table, stripping off his blood-spattered gloves and throwing them into the biohazard bin. He picked up a centrifuge tube filled with the blood he had drawn from Elena before the operation and held it up to the fluorescent light.

"Jack," Marcus said quietly, his brow furrowed in deep confusion.

Jack rubbed his bloodshot eyes, rising from the metal stool beside Elena’s bed. "What is it? Did the infection spread to her bloodstream?"

"No. The antibiotics are holding," Marcus answered, turning toward a battered computer terminal connected to an automated blood analyzer. "I ran her full genetic and immunological panel against the national database to see what specific antigens Liam was targeting."

"And?"

Marcus turned the monitor toward Jack. "Elena isn't an orphan plucked from a foster home by chance, Jack. Eleanor Vance didn't discover her through a charitable organization."

Jack froze, a cold premonition creeping up his spine. "What are you talking about?"

"Look at the DNA sequence," Marcus pointed at two comparative graphs on the screen. "Elena shares 50 percent of her non-mitochondrial genome with Liam Vance. That’s not a statistical anomaly. That’s direct paternal lineage."

Jack felt the breath leave his lungs as if he had been struck by a high-velocity slug. "She's... she's my sister?"

"Half-sister," Marcus corrected, his voice heavy. "Your father, old Arthur Vance, had an affair twenty-six years ago with an Eastern European housekeeper who mysteriously disappeared from the estate payroll. Elena was born nine months later in a county shelter. Eleanor knew all along. She knew who that girl was when you brought her home."

The horror of the realization settled into Jack’s marrow. Eleanor hadn't just used an unfortunate stranger to save Liam; she had systematically preyed upon the illegitimate daughter of the husband who had betrayed her, using Elena as a disposable human organ farm for her golden boy while simultaneously punishing her for her father’s sins.

Before Jack could speak, the warehouse’s external perimeter alarm shrieked.

On the black-and-white security monitor near the door, three black SUVs pulled into the alleyway, their high beams illuminating the rusted iron entrance.
