Chapter 3 - The Scent of Betrayal

"Hang up the phone," Jack said, his voice flat, steady, and terrifyingly calm. The eight-inch serrated blade gleamed under the hallway's sconces, leveled directly at his mother’s chest.

Eleanor lowered the screen slowly, her face pale, though her mouth curled into a patronizing sneer. "You would threaten your own mother with a knife? After everything this family did to send you to West Point? After everything we sacrificed to keep your military career spotless?"

"You traded Elena's life for Liam’s, didn't you?" Jack stepped into the doorway, blocking Elena's bed from sight. "Answer me."

Eleanor took a deep breath, smoothing her champagne robe with deliberate poise. "Liam had acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Jack. While you were playing soldier in third-world sandboxes, your younger brother was rotting from the inside out in the penthouse of St. Jude's Private Ward. The registry gave him four months. None of our family matched. Not me, not his father's bloodline. No one."

"And Elena did?"

"Her mother’s lineage carried the rare HLA antigen sequence," Eleanor stated coldly, without an ounce of remorse. "It was a miracle. A statistical impossibility. God put that orphan girl in your path not for you to marry, but to save the Vance heir. If she gave a little bone marrow, a little blood, what was the harm? She owes us everything! We plucked her out of foster care!"

"She is my wife!" Jack roared, the sheer volume rattling the glass in the windows. He stepped forward until the tip of his tactical knife was an inch from Eleanor’s throat. "I married her in the base chapel before I deployed! You knew that!"

"A marriage certificate signed without a prenup in a county clerk's office doesn't exist to this family," Eleanor hissed back, her jaw trembling with venom. "I buried the paperwork. Legally, she is a ward of the Vance Foundation under emergency medical guardianship. I have full power of attorney over her body."

Jack stared at the woman who had given birth to him. All the coldness, the calculated brutality he had witnessed in war zones paled in comparison to the aristocratic cruelty standing in front of him.

"Where is Liam now?" Jack asked, his voice deadly quiet.

"Recovering. He's at the lake retreat with Dr. Mercer, undergoing the final engraftment phase," Eleanor replied smugly. "Her sacrifice worked. Liam will live. And you, Jack, will pack your bag, take Elena to some private convalescent home in Maine, and forget this ever happened. If you raise a hand against this family, I will have you court-martialed for assault, dishonorably discharged, and Elena committed to a state asylum where she will never see the sun again."

Jack didn't blink. He lowered the knife, took the iron key right out of Eleanor’s frozen palm, and pocketed it.

"You think you own everything because you bought the judges and the doctors," Jack whispered into her ear as he brushed past her into the hall. "You forgot one thing, Eleanor. The Army trained me to clear compounds."

He turned and bolted the bedroom door from the outside, trapping his mother in the corridor, before racing toward the estate’s wine cellar.
