Chapter 1 - The Name in the Dust
The smell of burnt coffee and cheap grease hung heavy in the air of the roadside diner. Outside, the midday sun bounced off the rows of chrome handlebars, but inside the wooden booth, the atmosphere turned arctic. Gabriel sat frozen, his scarred knuckles wrapped around a cracked ceramic mug. The porcelain threatened to give under his grip. Across from him, his brothers—Dutch and Bones—went entirely still, the casual clatter of forks against plates dying instantly.
A six-year-old girl stood beside Gabriel’s scarred forearm, her tiny, pale index finger resting directly over the faded ink of a pirate skull and crossbones. Her touch was feather-light, completely detached from the sheer menace that the Iron Rogues carried everywhere they rode.
"What did you just say?" Gabriel’s voice grated like iron wheels dragging across gravel. The dark bandana over his head cast shadows over eyes that hadn't shown vulnerability in twenty years.
The girl didn't flinch. Her hazel eyes were wide and unblinking, free of the fear that usually cleared entire rooms whenever Gabriel walked through a doorway. "Gabriel," she repeated, the syllables rolling off her tongue with sweet, unhesitating clarity. "My dad had the same one. Right here." She tapped the skull’s eye socket.
Dutch leaned forward, his heavy silver rings clinking against the laminate table. "Who sent you, kid? Where’s your folks?"
The little girl didn’t look at Dutch. Her eyes stayed locked on Gabriel, seeing right through the thick beard, the scars, and the leather battle vest. "Mom told me never to say your name out loud unless I found the skull. She said if I found the skull on the road, I had to tell you that the debt came due."

Gabriel’s pulse slammed against his ribs. There was only one person on earth who knew that exact phrase. Seven years ago, he watched an old farmhouse burn into cinder in the Oregon hills, believing everyone inside had turned to ash.
Before he could breathe, the front glass of the diner exploded inward.
