Chapter 14 - Morning Light

By 9:00 AM, the boardroom on the top floor of the Whitfield Tower was filled to capacity. Board members, major shareholders, and international reporters crowded around the massive conference table, the atmosphere thick with stunned disbelief.
The doors opened.
Christian Whitfield walked into the room under his own power. He wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, though the white bandage across his forehead and the slight stiffness in his stride testified to the violence he had endured. Beside him walked Clara, dressed in an elegant slate-blue blazer, her head held high and proud.
The room erupted into a flurry of camera flashes and urgent questions. Christian raised a single hand, commanding absolute silence with quiet authority.
""Twenty-four hours ago, an attempt was made on my life,"" Christian announced, his voice reverberating with calm strength. ""The perpetrators have been arrested. The criminal conspiracy aimed at dismantling this company and framing an innocent woman has failed.""
He turned slightly, gesturing toward Clara. ""This is Clara Martinez. Without her courage, integrity, and refusal to be silenced, Whitfield Maritime would now be in the hands of murderers. As Chairman and majority shareholder, my first executive act today is the establishment of the Martinez Foundation for Corporate Accountability, with Clara serving as its permanent trustee.""

The room burst into applause. Clara looked up at Christian, her heart swelling as she met his steady, tender gaze. The nightmare was finally over.
Or so they believed.
