Chapter 8 - Fire on the Water

“Ambush!” Silas yelled, diving toward the tarps to shield Mia.
The corrugated iron walls tore open under a barrage of heavy caliber fire. Concrete dust exploded into the air as slugs chewed through the dry dock structures. Viktor’s men returned fire with deafening shotgun blasts, their muzzle flashes illuminating the swirling smoke in frantic bursts.
Val grabbed a discarded carbine from a fallen guard, leaned around a support beam, and fired three controlled double-taps. Three silhouettes outside the broken wall collapsed into the mud.
“To the boat!” Val shouted, dragging Sarah toward the water slip where a black offshore vessel was tethered. “Silas, cover the rear!”
Sarah had Mia tucked firmly against her chest, her body low as rounds ricocheted off the steel girders above. Silas held the rear, firing until his slide locked back. But as he turned to sprint toward the slip, a burst of gunfire caught him across the stomach. He stumbled, collapsing against the wooden dock edge.
Val reached for him, but Silas shook his head weakly, blood foaming on his lips as he shoved an electronic drive into Val’s hand. “The encryption key... for the Continental’s basement vault. Go, boss... protect the kid.”

Silas pulled the pin on an incendiary grenade tucked into his belt just as four masked gunmen breached the slip. The blast threw a curtain of white fire across the dock, severing the path behind them.
Val slammed the boat’s ignition, tearing out into the dark, choppy waves of the harbor.
