Chapter 4 - The Severed Link

The impact of the heavy magnetic clamp shook the entire frame, rattling Toby and Lily against the iron bars. The winch motor below roared to life, emitting a high-pitched mechanical whine that vibrated through the stone walls. The cable pulled taut, dragging the cage inches closer to the jagged precipice of the fractured floor.
Gabriel did not hesitate. Dropping low, he snatched up the rusted pry bar and wedged it beneath the front crossbeam of the cage, jamming it deep into the concrete crack to form an anchor. The cable strained; the steel wire strands groaned under terrifying tension, singing a lethal note of metallic stress.
""Gabriel, let it go,"" Clara shouted from the depths below, her expression entirely serene. ""If the cable snaps under this load, the whip will cleave you in half. Step away and let the transaction finalize. Your father signed the covenant thirty years ago.""
""My father is dead!"" Gabriel roared back, his hands tearing on the rough iron as he fought the hydraulic pull of the machine below.
""And his promises outlived him!"" she retorted.
Inside the cage, Toby demonstrated courage beyond his years. Wrapping one arm securely around his sobbing sister, he reached through the floor grating with his free hand, blindly attempting to kick at the magnetic housing locked onto the undercarriage. His sneaker struck the housing repeatedly, but the electromagnets were rated for industrial salvage. They remained unbroken.
Gabriel needed to sever the connection, but he had no cutting torch, no heavy shears. He looked up at the ceiling beams overhead. Hanging near the dead central bulb was an auxiliary high-voltage junction box that fed power to the estate's antiquated industrial boiler. Thick, rubber-insulated copper cables hung down, looped around a steel conduit pipe.
With a final, desperate shove against the pry bar to buy five seconds of friction, Gabriel sprinted to the wall, leaping upward to grab the hanging main line. He yanked it downward with his full momentum. The dry drywall screws ripped free from the joists, bringing twenty feet of live, heavy-gauge wire crashing to the floor in an explosion of blue sparks.
""Toby! Pull Lily to the very center! Don't touch the outer frame!"" Gabriel screamed.
Without a second thought, Gabriel wrapped the rubberized midsection of the severed main line around the pry bar's handle and drove the exposed copper core directly onto the winch’s steel cable.

A blinding flash of electrical fury illuminated the cavern. A terrifying arc of purple lightning erupted across the cable, traveling straight down into the platform below. Down in the tunnel, the winch control panel exploded in a shower of molten sparks. The tactical operator holding the remote shrieked as the current surged through his gloves, throwing him backward onto the tracks.
The cable went limp. The cage settled back onto the broken floor with a bone-jarring thud. But through the lingering smoke, Gabriel heard the sharp slide of a firearm being racked from the dark corridor behind him.
