Chapter 5 - Echoes in the Dark

The cold muzzle of an automatic handgun pressed directly against the base of Gabriel’s skull before he could turn around.
""Drop the wire, Mr. Vance,"" a voice commanded from the shadows behind him. It was not Clara. The voice was male, gravelly, and flat—the sound of someone who carried out executions as mere administrative routine.
Gabriel slowly opened his palms, letting the smoking electrical cable fall to the concrete. He raised his hands to shoulder height, keeping his eyes locked on his children. Toby had pulled Lily into his lap, shielding her face from whatever was about to happen. The boy’s hazel eyes were wide, unblinking, burning with an unnatural defiance.
""Step away from the pit,"" the man ordered. Gabriel complied, taking three deliberate backward steps until the barrel remained steady against the bridge of his nose.
The intruder was dressed in an unbranded tactical uniform, his tactical vest stripped of insignia. Yet on his left forearm, partially exposed by a pushed-up sleeve, Gabriel caught sight of a tattooed symbol: an ouroboros encircling a pair of balanced scales. Gabriel had seen that exact insignia once before—carved into the underside of his grandfather’s solid mahogany desk in the library upstairs.
""You're not mercenaries,"" Gabriel said through gritted teeth, his pulse hammering against his temples. ""You're the Trust.""
The man did not confirm or deny the statement. He simply adjusted his grip on the weapon. ""Your father was supposed to deliver the boy when he turned seven. You were never intended to be part of the arrangement, Mr. Vance. You were kept ignorant for your own protection. But your father failed to honor the collateral agreement before his stroke.""
""They're children!"" Gabriel snarled, taking half a step forward despite the gun barrel. ""They aren't collateral!""
""Everything has a valuation,"" the man replied coldly. ""Clara! The platform hoist is dead. Bring the ladder team up through the south drainage conduit.""
From the tunnel below, Clara’s voice echoed back, sharp and urgent. ""The structural integrity of this room is failing. The foundational pilings are shifting. We have four minutes before the west wing collapses into the crawlspace!""
As if to validate her warning, a sickening groan reverberated through the ceiling. Plaster rained down in thick sheets, striking Gabriel’s shoulders. The support beams above were splitting under the sudden void created by the collapsed slab. A hairline crack zigzagged up the north wall, rapidly widening as centuries-old brickwork buckled under thousands of tons of shifting masonry.

The guard momentarily flicked his eyes upward toward the groaning joists.
It was the only fraction of a second Gabriel needed. He drove his left elbow savagely backward into the man’s throat, simultaneously twisting his torso to clear the line of fire. The gunshot detonated in the enclosed space, a deafening crack that shattered the remaining masonry, but the slug ricocheted harmlessly off the cage’s iron ceiling.
