Chapter 6 - The Broken Covenant

The impact of Gabriel’s elbow crushed the guard’s windpipe, sending the armed man stumbling backward into the jagged concrete debris. Gabriel lunged forward, slamming his knee into the man’s chest, pinning him against the rubble. With two brutal, calculated strikes to the jaw, Gabriel neutralized the threat. The guard went limp, his weapon clattering into the darkness.
Gabriel tore the tactical ring from the man’s belt. Hanging from a heavy steel clip was a cluster of specialized tools, including an emergency hydraulic spread-wedge used by urban rescue units.
""Toby! Lily! Stay low!"" Gabriel yelled over the growing roar of settling foundations above them.
He rushed to the cage, inserting the wedge's jaws between the locking hasp and the primary steel vertical bar. He pumped the manual hand lever with frantic speed. The miniature hydraulic piston expanded with inexorable force. Metal shrieked. The heavy rivets holding the latch sheared off with three distinct, gunshot-like snaps.
The door swung outward.
Gabriel dragged both children into his arms in a single sweeping motion. Lily wrapped her small limbs around his neck like an iron band, burying her face against his collarbone, while Toby clutched his father’s jacket lapels with desperate strength.
""I have you,"" Gabriel breathed against Toby’s hair, the smell of dust and terror filling his senses. ""I have you both.""
""Dad, the stairs!"" Toby pointed through the haze.
The primary wooden staircase leading up to the kitchen was splintering under the weight of the shifting house above. Massive timbers were bowing inward, blocking the upper exit with a mountain of splintered lumber and falling brick. The only exit to the surface was completely sealed.
Behind them, Clara emerged from the pit, hoisting herself onto the stable section of the slab with athletic precision. In her hand, she held no cane, no riding crop; she held a small, black semi-automatic pistol, its slide locked back, ready to fire.
""You cannot run upward, Gabriel,"" she shouted, her hair finally coming loose, strands whipping across her pale, soot-stained face. ""The house is folding in on itself! The only path out is through the covenant tunnels below! Give them to me, and you might survive the night!""
""I would rather let this entire estate crush us all than let you touch them,"" Gabriel snarled, backing toward the rear corner of the basement where the old wine cellar stood behind a heavy iron-banded oak door.

""You don't understand what you're fighting!"" Clara took a step forward, raising the pistol with both hands. ""Your father didn't sell them for money! He traded them for your life thirty years ago!""
Gabriel froze, his boot poised on the threshold of the cellar door. The words hit him with the blunt impact of a sledgehammer.
