Chapter 12 - The Trial of Public Fire

"What is that?" Julian demanded, his voice rising in panic.

"I didn't just send the files to the FBI, Julian," Elena said, her voice dripping with venomous satisfaction. "Ten minutes ago, Marcus’s team uploaded the unredacted ledgers, the offshore accounts, and the security footage of you threatening to kidnap Lily and strip me of my sons to every major investigative journalism outlet in the Western Hemisphere."

Julian dropped the phone onto the desk.

"Turn on the monitors!" Julian roared at his staff. "Turn them on now!"

The chief strategist frantically grabbed the remote, switching the wall of television displays to live news feeds.

On the center screen, a prominent national anchor appeared beneath a breaking news banner that made Julian's stomach drop into an icy pit:

BREAKING NEWS: VANCE GLOBAL LEAKS REVEAL MASSIVE JUDICIAL BRIBERY RING. BILLIONAIRE JULIAN VANCE ACCUSED OF FORGING CUSTODY DOCUMENTS AND WEAPONIZING STATE POLICE AGAINST EX-WIFE.

A clip played on loop across the screen: the video footage from the penthouse office’s hidden security camera from yesterday morning. It showed Julian, cold and imperious, pointing his finger at Elena kneeling on the marble floor. His voice was broadcast into fifty million homes across the country: "Pick one of the boys. Lily stays here."

Then came Elena’s response, clear, tearful, and heroic: "I will not make my sons compete for their mother's love."

"Shut it off!" Julian screamed, sweeping a crystal water pitcher off the conference table. It shattered against the mahogany floor in an explosion of glass and water. "Shut it off!"

Judge Mercer stood up, his face ashen, grabbing his briefcase. "I’m out. Julian, you're on your own."

"You leave this room, Mercer, and I will personally ruin you!" Julian shouted.

"You already ruined us, you arrogant bastard!" Mercer yelled back, tearing his tie off as he sprinted for the private elevators. "Look outside! The SEC just suspended your trading stock!"

On the financial ticker at the bottom of the screen, Vance Global stock plummeted forty percent in pre-market trading, wiping out eighteen billion dollars of shareholder value in seven minutes.

Julian collapsed back into his leather chair, breathing heavily, clutching his broken arm. His empire, built over twenty-five years of ruthless calculated cruelty, was disintegrating in real-time before his eyes.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the boardroom opened.

It wasn't his security team.

Standing in the doorway were six federal agents wearing navy blue windbreakers with yellow letters across the back: FBI. Behind them walked the Assistant United States Attorney, holding an unsealed federal warrant.

"Julian Vance?" the prosecutor asked, stepping into the ruined boardroom.

Julian slowly raised his head, attempting to summon the terrifying corporate presence that had once brought governors to their knees. "You are trespassing on private corporate property. Speak to my legal counsel."

The prosecutor pulled a set of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, interstate bribery of a judicial officer, conspiracy, and false filing of an Amber Alert. Step away from the desk and put your hands behind your back."
