Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

Eighty stories above Manhattan, in the grand penthouse that had once been Elena’s home, the silence was suffocating.

In the long dining room beneath an antique crystal chandelier, eight-year-old Ethan sat at the head of the dark walnut table. Lucas and Oliver sat on either side of him. In front of each boy sat a plate of dry aged steak and roasted vegetables, prepared by the private chef. None of them had touched their food.

At the other end of the table, Julian Vance scrolled through an encrypted tablet, his expression unreadable.

"Eat," Julian said without looking up.

"Where is Mom?" Ethan asked, his voice steady despite the trembling in his small hands. "Where did you send her?"

Julian set the tablet down with a soft, ominous click. His cold hazel eyes bored into Ethan's. "Your mother made an irrational decision. She abandoned her responsibilities, took your sister against a court order, and fled like a coward. Until she surrenders Lily to the authorities, she is persona non grata in this household."

"You're lying," Lucas spoke up, his chin trembling. "You told her to pick! You told her Lily had to stay!"

Julian stood up, towering over the table. The sudden movement made Oliver flinch violently.

"Silence," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute authority that brooked no rebellion. "You three are heirs to an empire worth forty billion dollars. You do not whine. You do not question my decisions. In twenty-four hours, we are relocating to our estate in Geneva. You will begin your classical tutoring and boarding school preparation. You will forget this ridiculous domestic drama."

"I won't forget Mom," Oliver whispered under his breath.

Julian’s eyes locked onto Oliver. He stepped around the table, his heavy leather dress shoes clicking deliberately on the hardwood floor. He stopped behind Oliver’s chair, placing both hands on the boy’s small shoulders. Oliver stiffened, holding his breath.

"Oliver," Julian murmured, his fingers gripping slightly tighter than necessary. "You were standing near your mother’s luggage when the elevator opened. Did you give her something?"

Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs. He immediately kicked Lucas under the table and looked directly at his father. "Ollie was crying, Dad. He didn't do anything. He was scared of the security guards."

Julian tilted his head, watching Ethan’s face for any telltale sign of deceit. Julian had spent years grooming Ethan to be his successor, teaching him how to manipulate truth, how to mask intention. For the first time, Julian looked at his eight-year-old son and saw an impenetrable wall.

"Is that so?" Julian asked quietly.

"Yes, sir," Ethan answered without blinking. "We just want to go to our rooms."

Julian lingered for three agonizing seconds, his fingers digging into Oliver’s shoulders, before releasing him. "Go. Pack only your essential personal items. Everything else will be replaced upon our arrival in Switzerland."

The three boys stood up in unison, bowed their heads respectfully as Julian demanded, and marched down the long hallway toward their bedroom wing.

Once inside their shared master suite, Ethan immediately clicked the heavy brass lock into place. Lucas ran to the corner and began to weep into a pillow, while Oliver sat on his four-poster bed, hugging his knees.

"Did you give it to her?" Ethan whispered, kneeling beside Oliver.

Oliver nodded slowly, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "The red notebook from Dad’s desk safe. I copied the codes and the runway number for the flight."

"Good," Ethan said, pulling out a hidden satellite radio communicator he had stolen from Julian’s boat dock two months ago. "Mom will come. But until she does, we don't say a word. We stick together. Understood?"

Before Lucas or Oliver could answer, the bedroom lights abruptly shut off, plunging the room into total darkness. From the other side of the heavy mahogany door, the sound of an electronic deadbolt clicked, followed by Julian's cold voice through the intercom system: Sleep well, gentlemen. Your security detail will escort you to the airstrip at dawn.
