Chapter 2 - The Stolen Blueprint

The descent in the private elevator felt like falling into an endless abyss. Lily sobbed into Elena’s shoulder, the small plush teddy bear squeezed between their chests until its seams strained. Elena did not shed another tear. The sorrow that had nearly crippled her upstairs had crystallized into pure, unyielding rage.
When the doors opened into the cold cavern of the underground parking garage, Elena stepped out briskly. Julian’s private security chief, a man named Harris who had worked for the Vance family for two decades, walked beside them, ensuring they did not linger.
"Your cab is waiting at the street level, Mrs. Vance," Harris said, keeping his eyes forward, refusing to look directly at the weeping child. "Mr. Vance instructed me to inform you that your access codes to all family properties, bank accounts, and storage facilities have been terminated as of three minutes ago."
"Thank you for the courtesy, Harris," Elena replied coldly. "I hope the price of your soul was worth the bonus Julian wired you."
Harris said nothing, though his shoulders tightened beneath his tailored suit jacket. He held the security door open, watching Elena push through the turnstiles into the noisy, rain-slicked Manhattan street.
A yellow cab pulled to the curb, splashing dirty rainwater against the sidewalk. Elena quickly bundled Lily into the backseat, sliding the black suitcase across the floor mats before climbing in herself.
"Where to, lady?" the cabbie asked, glancing in the rearview mirror at the distraught woman and child.
"Just drive," Elena commanded. "Head downtown. Take the backstreets."
As the cab merged into the gridlock of midtown traffic, Lily began to quiet down, her little thumb finding its way into her mouth—a comforting habit she had abandoned a year ago. Elena stroked the girl's soft brown hair, kissing her damp forehead over and over.
"We’re going to be okay, baby," Elena whispered. "Mommy is here. Mommy will never let anyone take you."
"Where are Ethan and Luke and Ollie?" Lily asked, her small voice muffled. "Why didn't they come with us, Mommy? Did Daddy lock them up?"
"They had to stay for just a little while," Elena said, choking back the bile in her throat. "But we are going to get them back. I promise you on my life."
Remembering the frantic movement Oliver had made before the elevator doors closed, Elena reached down and pulled the front zipper of her carry-on suitcase. Her fingers brushed against a crisp piece of paper folded into a tiny, tight square. She pulled it out with trembling fingers.
It was not a child’s drawing or a sentimental goodbye letter.
Unfolding the thick cream paper, Elena recognized the official letterhead of Vance Global Enterprises. Across the page, written in the frantic, precise handwriting of an eight-year-old genius, was a series of encrypted access codes, an offshore banking routing number, and a hand-drawn map of Julian’s private compound in Upstate New York—the impenetrable fortress Julian had threatened to send the boys to if Elena ever contested the divorce.
Beneath the scrawled schematics, Oliver had written in neat pencil: He’s lying to everyone, Mom. Look in the safe house in Hudson Valley. Code 4190. Don’t let him find us.
Elena stared at the paper in utter shock. Oliver was only eight, but he possessed an eidetic memory; he must have memorized his father's private security logs while sitting in Julian's home study.
Suddenly, the driver slammed on his brakes, throwing Elena forward against the front seat divider.
"What's going on?" Elena gasped, bracing Lily with her arm.

"Black SUVs, lady!" the cabbie cursed, leaning on his horn. "They just cut me off! Two of 'em!"
Elena looked out the rain-streaked window. Two identical black Cadillac Escalades with heavily tinted windows and government-style plates had boxed the taxi against the curb. The doors swung open, and four men in tactical attire stepped out into the pouring rain.
