BLOODLINES OF ASH AND AMBER / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2 - The Silent Lineage

The blue glow of the burner screen cut through the dim study. Clara stared at the text lighting up the display: Run now. The fire alarm is not a drill.

Before she could process the words, deafening sirens shrieked through the mansion’s high ceilings, accompanied by the violent hiss of the fire suppression system. Cold water began misting down from the ornate cornices, extinguishing the lamps and plunging the estate into flashing red emergency lights.

Clara snatched the bloodstained journal and the phone, stuffing them into the inner pocket of her dark coat hanging by the coat stand. Behind the locked doors, heavy boots hammered the wood.

“Open the door, Clara! We know what’s in there!” Julian screamed from the hallway, his voice thick with unhinged desperation. “You have no idea what you’ve just touched!”

Clara didn’t hesitate. She threw open the tall French windows leading to the stone terrace. The freezing autumn wind whipped rain against her face as she stepped onto the stone ledge. The mansion was perched high above the river gorge, but a maintenance ladder led down to the old wine cellars.

She swung herself over the balustrade just as the study doors burst open with a splintering crash. Flashlight beams cut through the mist, illuminating Julian’s drenched, enraged silhouette.

“Shoot her down!” Eleanor’s shrill command echoed over the sirens.

Clara scrambled down the rusted rungs, her hands slipping against the wet iron. Bullets clipped the stone trim inches above her fingers, sending chips of marble raining down. She dropped the final ten feet, landing hard on the muddy gravel path flanking the estate’s forgotten rear gates.

Gasping for air, Clara darted through the overgrown hedges and slipped into the darkness of the surrounding woods. She kept moving until the mansion’s flashing red lights faded behind the dense canopy of pines.

Leaning against an ancient cedar tree to catch her breath, Clara unlocked the burner phone. The sender had no name, only a string of numbers. She typed back with trembling thumbs: Who are you?

Five seconds passed. Then the screen refreshed with an image—a photograph taken five minutes ago inside the dining room. It showed Julian kneeling beside his mother, but he wasn’t helping her up. His hands were clasped tightly around Eleanor’s throat.
