BLOODLINES OF ASH AND AMBER / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - Broadcast of Deceit

Crawling through five hundred yards of subterranean drainage pipe, Clara finally crawled out into a weed-choked ditch bordering the freight railway tracks. Wet, shivering, and covered in black grime, she collapsed into the brush, coughing out stagnant water.

The sun had risen behind a thick blanket of ash-colored clouds. Clara stripped off her heavy, waterlogged velvet dress, remaining in her dark undershift, and salvaged her coat from where she had wrapped the leather journal inside it. The waterproof binding had held; the pages were intact.

She made her way toward an automated freight terminal, hiding behind rows of stacked shipping containers until she spotted an open breakroom window. Peering through the glass, she saw a muted television hanging on the wall.

Across the bottom of the screen ran a bright red news ticker: BREAKING: ELEANOR VANCE FOUND DEAD IN ESTATE. POLICE SEEK WIDOW CLARA VANCE FOR CAPITAL MURDER.

The screen flashed a glamorous photograph of Clara from a charity gala last year, followed by an image of Julian standing outside the gates of the estate, surrounded by microphones. He had a white bandage wrapped artfully around his cheek, his eyes glistening with fabricated tears, playing the grief-stricken son for every television network in the country.

Clara clutched the rusted chain-link fence, her fingers digging into the wire until they bled. The audacity of his lie was suffocating. He had strangled his own mother, yet the entire city was now hunting her as a ruthless gold-digger who had struck down a matriarch.

She found a maintenance locker near the railroad siding, breaking the rusty latch with a heavy iron spike. Inside, she found a set of faded navy mechanic overalls and an old pair of steel-toed work boots. She traded her clothes quickly, pulling a greasy cap low over her recognizable auburn hair.

Sitting on an overturned crate, she pulled the journal from her coat. With a small utility razor from the workbench, Clara carefully slit the leather binding along the inner spine.

A sliver of black plastic fell into her palm: a micro-SD card sealed in resin.

Nearby, a desktop computer hummed inside the unlocked dispatcher’s booth. Clara slipped inside, booted the terminal, and inserted the card with trembling hands. A single audio file appeared, titled VANCE_NOVEMBER_TRANSCRIPT.wav.

She plugged in an old headset and hit play. A low, distorted voice began speaking—not Mark, not Julian, but someone whose voice turned Clara’s blood to ice.

“Julian is reckless, Eleanor. If the girl figures out what happened to Mark’s trust fund, erase her.”

The speaker was Judge Raymond Sterling—the very magistrate in charge of issuing her arrest warrant.
