Chapter 6 - The Architect's Gavel

The audio recording continued to play, each second peeling back years of calculated manipulation. Clara recognized the deep, theatrical baritone of Judge Raymond Sterling. He wasn’t merely a corrupt public official; he had been her late father’s closest confidant and the executor of her family’s entire estate.

“Everything Clara inherited from her father was legally transferred into Mark’s company three months before his accident,” Sterling’s recorded voice explained coldly. “Now that Mark is gone, Eleanor holds the power of attorney. If Clara signs the waiver Julian prepared, every penny flows offshore into the Geneva trust. If she refuses, Julian knows how to remove an obstacle.”

Clara gripped the edge of the dispatcher's desk until the cheap laminate creaked. The entire marriage had been orchestrated. Mark hadn’t stumbled into her life by accident; his family had courted her under Sterling’s direction to strip her father’s shipping empire clean of its assets. But Mark had ruined their plans by falling in love with her—and paid for it with his life.

She copied the audio file onto three separate flash drives she scavenged from the desk drawer. Just as the transfer finished, the terminal screen flashed an error message. A network security alert flared red across the monitor: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED - TERMINAL 04.

Footsteps crunched heavily on the gravel outside the booth.

Clara pulled the thumb drives, grabbed her coat, and flattened herself against the wooden partition. Through the dirty window, she saw two city patrol cruisers rolling slowly along the tracks, their spotlights sweeping over the parked boxcars. Sterling had already tapped the municipal data feeds; any electronic activity on the Vance network was flagged instantly.

She couldn’t stay in the freight yard. She had no money, no safe haven, and the entire law enforcement apparatus was hunting her under Sterling’s orders.

There was only one person left in the city who despised Judge Sterling more than the Vance family did: Gabriel Cross, a disgraced former investigative reporter who had spent five years in federal prison after Sterling framed him for corporate espionage.

Clara slipped out the rear window of the dispatcher booth, dropped into the shadow of a moving grain train, and swung onto the metal ladder of a passing car heading south toward the harbor slums.

As the train picked up speed, the phone in her overalls pocket vibrated. Clara pulled it out in alarm. It wasn't the burner phone she had thrown away. It was an old backup device tucked into the mechanic’s coat she had stolen.

The screen lit up with a single text from an unknown local number: I watched you board the grain car, Mrs. Vance. Jump off at the fifth mile marker, or you won't survive the bridge.
