Chapter 1 - The Broken Seal

The air inside the sunlit living room turned instantly freezing. Marcus stood like a monolith between the hallway and the gathering, his chest heaving under the black cotton of his shirt, phone clutched in white-knuckled fingers. On the cream-colored rug, Elena lay completely limp, her hands curled over her swollen belly.

""I said nobody moves,"" Marcus repeated, his voice dropping into a guttural register that made the glass coffee table rattle. His eyes were fixed entirely on Vanessa.

Vanessa took half a step back, her bare feet sinking into the plush fibers. The olive-green knit dress clung to her rigid frame. Her mouth parted, trembling slightly, but no sound escaped. Beside her, Arthur—Marcus's father—clenched his jaw, his gaze shifting nervously from Elena’s still form to Marcus’s furious eyes. The young boy, Leo, clung to Arthur’s sleeve, tears silently pooling in his wide eyes.

""Marcus, son, calm down,"" Arthur muttered, raising both hands in a placating gesture. ""Let’s just get her help. It was an accident. We were just talking.""

""Talking?"" Marcus snapped, his glare piercing straight into Vanessa. ""You call shoving a seven-month pregnant woman 'talking'?""

""She tripped, Marcus!"" Vanessa finally blurted out, her voice pitching up in frantic self-defense. ""She lost her footing! Ask your father! Tell him, Arthur!""

Arthur’s throat bobbed. He hesitated, his silence stretching thick and toxic. In that hesitation, sirens began wailing faintly in the distance, cutting through the quiet suburban neighborhood. Marcus knelt back down beside Elena, brushing curls away from her clammy forehead. Her eyelids fluttered weakly, lips parting in a barely audible whimper.

""Hold on, Elena,"" Marcus whispered, terror cracking through his stern façade. ""Stay with me.""

Elena’s hand weakly reached up, her fingers gripping Marcus’s forearm. She pulled him down slightly, her breath shallow and erratic.

""The safe..."" Elena breathed, her voice raspy, desperate. ""Marcus... check the safe before they take it...""

Marcus froze, staring down at her. Behind him, the faint click of a handbag zipper echoed from the foyer.
