Chapter 12 - The Black Ledger

Within minutes, state troopers and FBI agents swarmed the surgical wing, securing the perimeter and disarming Arthur’s men. Donald Reyes walked through the chaos, flashing his former federal credentials to the commanding officers before walking up to Marcus.

""Elena is in critical condition, but they've transferred her to the private ICU on the top floor,"" Donald said quietly. ""The baby is in an incubator. Both are breathing on their own.""

Marcus leaned against the hallway wall, exhaustion threatening to pull him under. ""And Leo?""

""Leo is safe with child services agents right now, eating ice cream. He told them everything he saw."" Donald pulled a clear plastic evidence bag from his jacket. Inside was a small, tarnished silver USB drive. ""I found this hidden inside your mother’s sewing kit at the estate. It's the master key to the ledger.""

Marcus stared at the drive. ""What is on it, Donald?""

Donald took a deep breath, looking around the crowded hallway. ""Arthur wasn’t working alone, Marcus. He was laundering money for a cartel syndicate operating out of Chicago. He used Vance Logistics to transport their product across state lines. Your mother found out, and when she threatened to go to the authorities, he poisoned her heart medication.""

Marcus’s stomach twisted into a violent knot. His mother’s death hadn't been an unfortunate illness; it had been cold-blooded execution.

""And Elena?"" Marcus asked, his voice cracking. ""Why target Elena?""

""Elena was doing the annual financial audit for the logistics company,"" Donald replied. ""She stumbled onto an eight-million-dollar discrepancy three days ago. She didn't tell you because she wanted to verify the bank routing numbers first. Arthur knew she was hours away from exposing him.""

Marcus turned his head toward the end of the hall, where two federal agents were dragging Arthur Vance away in handcuffs. Arthur’s eyes locked onto Marcus’s, burning with unrepentant malice.

""It’s over, Arthur,"" Marcus said quietly.

Arthur sneered, his mouth full of red foam. ""It’s never over, son. Look behind you.""
