Chapter 14 - Into the Underbelly

The air in the basement tunnels was damp and suffocating, thick with the smell of industrial steam, grease, and rotting concrete. Pipes hissed overhead, vibrating with high-pressure runoff. Marcus moved swiftly, his footsteps silent on the wet stone floor.
Every second that passed felt like a century. His newborn child was only an hour old, fragile, requiring warmth and medical monitoring.
Up ahead, through the mist of a broken steam pipe, Marcus saw a shadow moving quickly. A figure wrapped in a dark trench coat, cradling a small bundle against her chest.
""Vanessa!"" Marcus shouted, the sound echoing through the cavernous corridor like thunder.
The figure stopped, spinning around. Vanessa stood beneath a flickering yellow service light. Her eyes were sunken, completely wild with panic. In her arms, wrapped tightly in a woolen blanket, Marcus could see the tiny form of his son.
""Stay back, Marcus!"" she screamed, taking a step toward the edge of an open maintenance grate that dropped twenty feet into the subway drainage system below. ""Don't come any closer!""
""Vanessa, look at what you’re doing,"" Marcus pleaded, slowing his pace, raising his hands in surrender. ""That baby needs oxygen. He won't survive down here.""
""I have nothing left!"" Vanessa cried, tears cutting through the grime on her face. ""Arthur promised me fifty million! He promised me a life in Switzerland! Now the FBI is upstairs! My life is over!""
""Your life isn't over,"" Marcus said, taking a cautious, agonizingly slow half-step forward. ""Arthur manipulated you. You can testify against him. You can save yourself. But if you hurt that boy, there is no corner of this earth where you will be safe from me.""
Vanessa looked down at the tiny face peeking out from the blanket. The baby stirred, letting out a faint, pitiful whimper.
Her hands began to shake uncontrollably. ""He didn't do anything wrong,"" she whispered, her voice suddenly breaking into genuine grief. ""He was just a baby...""

""Give him to me, Vanessa,"" Marcus said softly, stretching his arm out. ""Please.""
She took a trembling step toward him, extending the bundle. But as she moved, the rusted iron grate beneath her heels gave way with a sickening screech of tearing metal.
