Chapter 1 - The Gates Behind Us

The tires screamed against asphalt as Arthur slammed the throttle forward. Elena collapsed against the leather upholstery, her lungs burning, chest heaving beneath her torn floral dress. Her bare soles were lacerated from the gravel, leaving faint smears of crimson on the floor mats. Behind them, through the tinted rear glass, the two armed security guards shrank into distant silhouettes before the wrought-iron gates slammed shut.
""Julian won't stop,"" Elena whispered, her fingernails digging into the seams of the passenger seat. ""Arthur, you saw what he did in the study. He’ll tear the state apart to drag me back.""
Arthur didn’t flinch. His knuckles remained chalk-white around the steering wheel, his eyes tracking the tree-lined private road ahead. A former enforcer for the Sterling family, he had served three generations of tyrants, but tonight an invisible threshold had been crossed.
""Julian has money, Miss Elena, but he does not yet own every road out of this county,"" Arthur said, his voice gravelly, stripped of panic. ""Keep your head below the window line.""
The SUV rocketed onto the state route, cutting through dense pine forests as the afternoon sun cast long, predatory shadows across the asphalt. Arthur’s phone on the console buzzed violently. The caller ID flashed a single, dreaded name: Julian Sterling.
Arthur didn't answer. Instead, he reached over and powered the device down, tossing it into the glove box.
""Where are you taking me?"" Elena asked, wiping sweat and road grime from her brow.
""To the only place his family's lawyers cannot touch,"" Arthur answered grimly.

Suddenly, a loud metallic ping reverberated beneath the carriage. Elena gasped as a red warning light flashed across the digital dashboard: GPS Tracking Override Active.
Arthur’s gaze hardened into flint. ""He didn't need to chase us on foot. He already tagged the chassis.""
