The marble foyer still hummed with the echo of Julian’s roar. His fingers dug into the cold drywall, pinning Beatrice—the revered matriarch of the Hawthorne empire—against the upper gallery wall. Her immaculate silver hair was slightly disheveled, but her steely gaze remained defiant, glistening with cold calculation.
Below on the polished white stone, Elena knelt in her deep maroon dress, wrapping her shaking body around the infant boy. Leo's muffled cries subsided into fragile hiccups against her bare chest. Beatrice chuckled softly, a sound like dry autumn leaves scraping pavement. She tilted her chin up, wholly unfazed by the threat of imprisonment. ""Did they, Julian? You think you hold the controls in my house?""

A deep, mechanical click echoed from the basement levels, followed by the heavy thud of automatic steel security shutters dropping over every exterior window and doorway.
Elena shrieked from the foot of the staircase as the massive front doors were sealed by hydraulic locks. Trapped within their own sanctuary, Julian wheeled around, but the shadow of three towering private security guards stepped out from the library corridor, their hands resting on concealed holsters.
