Chapter 15 - The Ashes of the Throne

Hector’s smile faded as four black tactical gunboats surged into the harbor, opening fire on his cargo vessel with heavy machine guns. The Mendoza syndicate had arrived.
Simultaneously, sirens wailed from the city side as federal tactical teams—alerted by Sofia's mass distribution of the unredacted files—swarmed the entry gates. Caught between rival cartel hitmen and international law enforcement, Hector’s men panicked, returning fire in all directions.
""Kill him!"" Hector shrieked, pointing down at Julian.
Julian sprinted between the towering rows of steel shipping containers as bullets ricocheted off the corrugated walls. A guard lunged from around a corner; Julian sidestepped, disarmed the man with a vicious strike to the throat, and seized his assault rifle.
Climbing the iron stairs to the vessel’s main deck, Julian stalked through the smoke and crossfire until he found Hector crawling toward an emergency escape speedboat at the stern. Hector had taken a round to the shoulder, his expensive linen shirt soaked in red.
""Julian... wait!"" Hector gasped, backing away against the railing as Julian leveled the rifle at his face. ""We can split it! The accounts... there's three billion dollars in Zurich! You can rebuild the Hawthorne empire!""
Julian looked down at the bleeding monster who had financed his mother’s insanity and murdered his father.
""The Hawthorne empire is dead,"" Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. ""And so are you.""
Julian squeezed the trigger.
Hector slumped backward over the railing, tumbling into the churning black water below, swallowed forever by the sea.
Julian dropped the rifle. He reached into his pocket, took the cryptographic microchip containing the entire family fortune, and threw it into the dark waves after Hector. He walked down the ship's gangplank into the smoke, ditching his bloody jacket among the burning containers.
Three weeks later, on a secluded, sun-drenched beach in the Azores, a small fishing boat pulled up to the wooden dock. Elena was sitting on the porch of a whitewashed cottage, holding Leo on her lap as the ocean breeze ruffled the boy’s hair.
Footsteps sounded on the wooden planks.
Elena looked up, her heart stopping.
A man walked toward them, wearing simple linen clothes, the scars on his knuckles healed, his dark eyes entirely devoid of the Hawthorne shadow. He knelt in front of them, smiling softly as Leo reached out a tiny hand toward his cheek.

""It’s over,"" Julian said.
Elena pulled him close, burying her face in his neck, the nightmare finally dissolving into the sound of the ocean waves. The dynasty had fallen, but the family was born anew."
