Chapter 14 - The Phantom Gambit

Julian spent the next twenty-four hours orchestrating the final trap. Using Sofia’s secure satellite uplink, he leaked selective fragments of the Black Ledger to Hector’s fiercest rival, the Mendoza syndicate. The message was simple: Julian Hawthorne was delivering the master key to Hector personally at the Port of Cartagena.
The bait was set. Hector would arrive with his full force to claim the ledger, while the Mendoza cartel would mobilize to annihilate Hector before he could consolidate power.
In the dead of night, Julian prepared to leave the safehouse alone. Elena caught him by the doorway, her eyes brimming with tears.
""You don't have to be a martyr, Julian,"" she whispered, her hands gripping the lapels of his fresh black jacket. ""We can run. We can change our names. We can hide in Europe.""
""We can never hide, Elena,"" Julian replied softly, caressing her cheek. ""I watched my mother try to drop our baby from a balcony because of this greed. I watched my father die in a burning hangar. If I don't crush this serpent now, Leo will spend his entire life looking over his shoulder.""
He leaned down and kissed Leo’s sleeping forehead, then pressed his lips to Elena’s. ""When the news reports that the Port of Cartagena has fallen, Sofia will take you to a private island in the Azores. Live a good life. Raise our boy to be better than the Hawthornes.""
""Julian, please—""
""I love you both,"" he whispered, breaking her hold and stepping out into the desert night.
Twelve hours later, Julian walked into the open shipping container yard at the Port of Cartagena, carrying a steel briefcase. Hector Calderon was waiting on the catwalk of a cargo vessel, surrounded by thirty armed guards.

""Right on time, Julian,"" Hector called out mockingly over the sound of breaking waves. ""Do you have the key?""
Julian opened the briefcase, revealing the tiny microchip, wired directly to a remote radio detonator. ""I have something better, Hector. I have an audience.""
