Chapter 15 - The Unlocked Door

Twenty-four hours later, the private maternity suite at the coastal university medical center was guarded by two uniformed state troopers standing outside the double doors. Clara lay in the raised hospital bed, clean and bandaged, with her daughter sleeping soundly in a clear plastic bassinet beside her right hand.
A light knock sounded at the door. It swung open to reveal Arthur Campbell, holding an unsealed leather portfolio, accompanied by two detectives from the state police criminal investigation division.
""Ethan and Eleanor were detained forty minutes ago at the international terminal in San Diego,"" Arthur said quietly, stepping to the side of the bed. ""Their private charter was turned around before it cleared Mexican airspace once the dispatch logs and the home-system records were seized.""
Clara looked up, her expression entirely devoid of warmth. ""Did Ethan speak?""
""He claimed it was a misunderstanding. He claimed his mother arranged the security details,"" Arthur replied, setting the portfolio down on the rolling bedside table. ""Eleanor refused to speak without counsel. But it doesn't matter what they say. The telemetry pulled from the smart-home server proves the exterior locks were engaged from Ethan's personal device while he was standing on the front porch. The criminal charges are attempted murder and reckless endangerment of an unborn child.""
Arthur opened the folder, revealing a single-page document bearing the formal seal of the Vance Family Trust.
""Under the specific terms of your husband’s paternal trust,"" Arthur continued, his voice neutral and professional, ""any felony act committed by a primary heir against an immediate descendant results in immediate, irrevocable disqualification. All custodial authority, executive shares, and real estate assets transfer directly to the legal guardian of the next generation.""
He handed her an executive pen. Clara looked at the signature line beneath the header naming her as sole trustee and conservator of the entire Vance estate.
She took the pen, signing her name in smooth, unbroken strokes.

As she set the pen down, her phone on the bedside table lit up with a notification. It was a live alert from the smart-home security application, which had been restored to factory settings and re-routed to her private device by the state investigators.
On the screen was a live video feed of the mansion's front entrance. The heavy mahogany door stood wide open under the morning light. The brass padlock lay snapped in two on the concrete steps, discarded in the dirt. And beneath the live camera feed, a simple prompt blinked in green text: System Status: Perimeter Unlocked. Awaiting New Master."
