Chapter 5 - The Architect's Blueprint

The air in the narrow utility crawlway grew noticeably thin. Clara’s lungs burned as she crawled over the gravel and sharp foundational aggregate, dragging her belly carefully across the uneven terrain. The revelation on the inspection tag gnawed at her fading strength. Ethan hadn't just secured the house against an interruption to his Cabo holiday; he had systematically isolated the structure’s life-support systems.
She understood now why the air conditioning had felt strangely stagnant before they departed. The auxiliary ventilation units had been sealed shut. Within twelve hours, an airtight building of this construction, sealed against the summer heat, would see carbon dioxide levels rise steadily to dangerous thresholds. It was an accident designed to look like a mechanical malfunction—an unfortunate systems failure during an unseasonable heatwave while the master of the house was provably three thousand miles away.
""Not going to happen,"" Clara whispered, her voice a harsh, dry rattle in the darkness. ""Not to us.""
She crawled another ten yards, the rough floor tearing through her cardigan at the elbows. The crawl space began to slope upward, terminating against the concrete foundation wall of the garden shed. At the end of the trench, a square maintenance grate provided a glimmer of natural daylight. Clara pressed her face toward the opening, drawing in the sweet, warm scent of outdoor grass and pine needles.

The grate was secured by a single rusted hinge and an external slide bolt. Clara raised the paring knife, wedging the steel point between the rusted frame and the brickwork. She leveraged her entire upper body against the handle. With a sharp crack that splintered the drywall surrounding the perimeter, the rusted screw sheared in half.
Clara kicked out with the heel of her shoe, sending the iron grate clattering onto the flagstones of the private service courtyard. She pulled herself up by the edge of the opening, half-blinded by the sudden glare of the afternoon sun. As her head cleared the masonry, the sudden sound of heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel directly outside the high security fence.
