Chapter 2 - The Scent of Cold Stone

The realization did not hit Clara with panic; it hit her with a terrible, crystalline clarity. They had not merely abandoned her to catch an international flight to Cabo; they had ensured she could not interrupt their vacation with a medical crisis. Eleanor had always resented Clara’s background, viewing her as an opportunistic interloper who had trapped her heir. Now, with Ethan's inheritance clause hinging on a legitimate child born under his surname, the stakes were far higher than Clara had ever dared to imagine.

Another contraction struck, shorter than the last but violently sharp, radiating down into her pelvic floor. Clara squeezed her eyes shut, fighting the urge to bear down. She was alone in an eight-thousand-square-foot minimalist fortress situated three miles outside city limits, surrounded by a six-foot privacy wall and an automated iron gate. No mail carrier would arrive until afternoon, and the estate’s nearest neighbors were weekenders who rarely visited before Friday night.

She forced her forearms beneath her chest, pushing up from the marble floor with agonizing slowness. Every inch gained cost her a jagged mouthful of air. Her cardigan snagged against the floor molding, dragging behind her as she crawled toward the great room. The open-plan design that had once seemed airy and modern now felt like an endless desert of hard surfaces and sharp edges.

As she reached the perimeter of the living room, her eyes fixed on the panoramic glass patio doors overlooking the cliffside infinity pool. The locking mechanism on those doors was operated by an internal motorized latch wired directly into the smart-home terminal. If she could reach the control panel by the kitchen island, she could disengage the patio lock, crawl into the courtyard, and trip the perimeter alarm.

Dragging herself past the gray leather sectional, Clara reached the mahogany island. Her trembling hand stretched toward the digital wall unit. But as her fingers brushed the touch panel, the screen flared red. Across the dark glass glowed a system message: Security Protocol Active – Override Disabled by Master User: Ethan Vance.
