Chapter 13 - Dawn of a New Road

The morning sun broke over the pine-covered hills, washing the forest clearing in a warm, golden glow. The flashing police lights were gone, replaced by the quiet chirping of morning birds and the fresh scent of dew on grass. The old forestry cabin stood peacefully in the morning light, its broken door a reminder of a storm that had finally passed.

Jax sat on the front porch steps, nursing a cup of black coffee from a thermos, watching Leo toss small pinecones into the dirt yard. The boy wore a brand-new jacket Jax had picked up during the town run, but he still clutched the faded photograph of a young biker holding a baby in his breast pocket—now safely tucked beside the folded letter from Sarah.

A sleek black cruiser rolled up the gravel driveway, stopping near the porch. Martha stepped out from the passenger seat, holding a fresh bag of pastries and smiling warmly as she saw the two of them together. She walked up the wooden steps and handed the bag to Leo, who grinned brightly.

“Looks like the local diner is going to be a lot quieter without Diesel and his thugs running the county,” Martha said, leaning against the porch railing next to Jax. “FBI agents came by this morning. Said your testimony and the ledgers cleaned out the entire regional syndicate. You’re a free man, Jax. Legally and completely.”

Jax looked up at Martha, offering a genuine, relaxed smile that hadn’t touched his face in fifteen years. “Thanks for everything, Martha. You saved more than just our lives back there.”

“Just making sure a good kid gets the father he deserves,” Martha replied, patting Jax’s shoulder before heading back toward the car. “Don’t be a stranger, you two.”
