Chapter 8 - The Safe Haven in the Woods

The truck ground to a halt beneath the thick canopy of towering pine trees, hidden deep within the overgrown yard of an abandoned forestry cabin. The radiator hissed furiously, venting a plume of white steam into the cool evening air. Jax cut the engine, plunging the cabin into an eerie, trembling silence broken only by the sound of their heavy breathing.

Leo slowly lifted himself up from the floorboard, brushing stray shards of shattered glass off his old jacket. His hazel eyes were wide with adrenaline, but remarkably, there were no tears—only a fierce, resilient spark that reminded Jax painfully of Sarah.

“Are they gone?” Leo whispered, looking out the broken rear window.

“For now,” Jax said, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his tattooed hand. “That bridge is too old for their heavy bikes to cross safely without risking a wipeout. It buys us a little time.”

They stepped out of the truck into the damp, pine-scented air of the forest. The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long, crimson shadows across the peeling wooden walls of the cabin. Jax pushed the creaking front door open, revealing a dusty interior furnished with a moth-eaten sofa, a stone fireplace, and a heavy wooden table. It was a ghost of his past, a place he hadn't visited since the night he went underground fifteen years ago.

Leo walked over to the stone fireplace, setting the faded photograph down gently on the mantle. Then, he reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out the small folded paper he had been guarding with his life. He handed it to Jax with both hands.

“Mom wrote this the night before she passed away,” Leo said softly. “She told me to read it only when I found you.”

Jax’s hands shook as he unfolded the delicate piece of yellowed paper. Written in Sarah’s familiar, elegant cursive were words that pierced his soul: ‘If he ever finds you, tell him I never stopped waiting. And tell him our son has his eyes.’

A tear finally broke free, cutting a clean path through the dirt and stubble on Jax’s rugged cheek. He looked down at Leo, dropping to one knee, and pulled his son into a fierce, suffocating embrace.
