Chapter 7 - Pursuit in the Dust

“Hold on!” Jax roared, slamming his foot down on the gas pedal until the engine screamed in protest. The old pickup truck bounced violently over a deep pothole, sending Leo flying against the passenger door before he managed to brace himself. In the rearview mirror, the two motorcycles grew larger, weaving skillfully through the thick white dust clouds kicked up by the truck. It was Diesel’s top enforcers, sent to hunt them down.
“They’re catching up!” Leo yelled over the deafening roar of the straining engine and the screeching tires.
Jax’s mind raced. The service road was narrow, flanked by steep ditches and thick timberland on both sides. There was no place to turn around, and the old truck lacked the speed to outrun sport bikes on a dirt track. He gripped the steering wheel with absolute focus, his biker instincts kicking into overdrive. He knew every turn, every hidden logging trail in these woods from the days before he joined the Iron Skulls.
“Get down on the floorboard, Leo! Now!” Jax commanded, reaching across to push the boy down beneath the dashboard.
A loud, metallic clang rang out as a heavy object struck the truck bed—one of the enforcers had thrown a crowbar or a chain. The rear window shattered into a thousand tiny crystals, raining glass over the truck cabin. Jax gritted his teeth, refusing to look back. Up ahead, a sharp hairpin turn approached, leading toward an old abandoned logging bridge that crossed a rushing river. It was a high-risk gamble: take the turn too fast, and they’d plunge into the ravine; brake too hard, and the bikers would box them in.

Jax yanked the emergency brake and jerked the steering wheel hard to the left. The truck drifted sideways in a massive cloud of dirt and gravel, its tires squealing in protest as it barely cleared the wooden guardrails of the old bridge. Behind them, the two enforcers took the turn too wide, forced to slam on their brakes to avoid sliding off the cliff.
Jax crossed the bridge, smashing through a rotting wooden gate on the other side, plunging deeper into the dense, shadowed forest.
