Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary of Cold Marble

The chill of the polished hospital floor seeped through Julian Thorne’s tailored trousers, but he didn’t move an inch. He cradled Lois against his chest, his dark eyes tracing the brutal constellations of violet and amber mottling her slender forearms. She was shivering violently, her white scrub top soaked with sweat and terror. Every breath she pulled into her lungs sounded like tearing paper.
""Julian... don't,"" she pleaded, her voice barely louder than a ghost’s whisper. ""He said... he said nobody would ever take my word over his. He owns this hospital. He owns the police.""
Julian didn’t answer right away. Instead, he unbuttoned his charcoal wool coat, wrapping the thick, warm fabric around her shaking shoulders. His touch was feather-light against her bruised wrists, a sharp contrast to the venom pooling behind his stony gaze. Standing twenty paces down the hall, Eleanor Thorne pressed gloved hands over her mouth, her porcelain facade cracking into horror as she recognized the girl in her son’s arms.
""Nobody touches what is mine,"" Julian murmured, lifting Lois effortlessly as though she weighed nothing at all. ""And nobody walks away from this.""
As he turned toward the private elevator reserved for executive trustees, the heavy double doors at the end of the corridor swung violently open. Dr. Christian Burke stepped through, a stethoscope casually draped over his designer lab coat, his lips curved into an arrogant smirk.

Behind Burke stood two armed hospital guards, their hands resting deliberately on their holsters.
""Put her down, Mr. Thorne,"" Christian called out smoothly, taking a slow step forward. ""Nurse Vance is currently undergoing an acute psychiatric evaluation. She belongs in my ward.""
