Chapter 15 - The Dawn After the Storm

Two weeks later, the morning sun broke through the autumn foliage outside the private Thorne estate in the Hudson Valley. The storm that had gripped the city had finally washed away, leaving the air crisp and clean.
The morning headlines lay scattered on the terrace table: STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL ARRESTED IN MASSIVE MEDICAL CONSPIRACY. SURGEON CHRISTIAN BURKE FACING MULTIPLE COUNTS OF HOMICIDE. ELEANOR THORNE COOPERATING WITH FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS.
Julian stood on the terrace, dressed in a simple dark sweater, sipping black coffee as he watched Clara laughing in the garden below, color returning to her cheeks under the care of the country's best independent oncologists.
A pair of soft, warm hands rested gently against his back. Julian turned, looking down at Lois. The bruising on her face had faded to faint yellow shadows, and her eyes were bright, clear, and steady.
""They offered me a nursing residency at Mount Sinai,"" she said quietly, leaning into his chest. ""Starting next spring.""
Julian placed his hand over hers, his fingers intertwining with her scarred wrist. ""You don't have to look over your shoulder anymore, Lois. Christian Burke will spend the rest of his life in a supermax facility. He will never hold a scalpel again.""
Lois looked up at him, a faint, beautiful smile touching her lips. ""And what about you, Julian? You gave up the family empire. You dismantled your own board.""
""I gave up a cage,"" Julian murmured, his thumb grazing her cheek with infinite tenderness. ""And I found something worth protecting.""
He pulled her into an embrace, the autumn breeze rustling the leaves around them.

Then, Julian’s secure phone buzzed once on the marble table. Lois glanced down, her smile freezing as she read the encrypted text displayed on the screen:
The federal transport carrying Christian Burke was ambushed ten minutes ago on Route 9. Burke is gone. He’s coming back for her."
