Chapter 1 - The Broken Dynasty

The crystal chandelier shuddered as the grand double doors slammed shut against the storm outside. Sheriff Thomas Cole stepped forward, rain dripping from the brim of his hat, his service weapon drawn but resting low against his hip. Across the polished oak ballroom floor, Eleanor Vance remained on her knees, her manicured fingers trembling as she pulled back the edge of Clara’s ivory silk gown. The bruise was an ugly, mottled constellation of violent purple and sickly yellow, blooming across Clara’s swollen belly like an accusation. Julian stood just two paces away, his tailored grey suit pristine, but the pulse in his throat hammered against his collar.
""Step back from her, Julian,"" Eleanor commanded, her voice dropping into a register that had broken boardrooms and ruined political careers. ""Don't you dare touch her.""
Clara let out a shallow, whistling gasp, her hands clawing desperately at Eleanor’s navy lapel. Shards of champagne glass ground into the hardwood beneath her hips, staining the white fabric with blooming crimson petals. Her lips moved, dry and pale, trying to form a syllable that drowned under the roar of thunder outside. Julian didn’t retreat; instead, his dark eyes widened with a frantic, unhinged luminescence.
""Mother, you don't understand what she did,"" Julian stammered, raising his hands in false surrender as Sheriff Cole closed the distance between them. ""She fell. It was an accident. I tried to catch her—""
""Save it for the station, Mr. Vance,"" Sheriff Cole growled, placing a heavy, gloved palm flat against Julian’s chest and shoving him toward the wall. ""Paramedics are on the stairs. Move aside.""
Eleanor leaned down, pressing her forehead against Clara’s sweat-slicked brow. ""Stay with me, Clara. Breathe for the baby. Focus on my voice.""

Clara’s tear-filled eyes locked onto Eleanor’s face, not with gratitude, but with sheer, unadulterated terror. With the last reserve of her fading strength, the young woman pulled Eleanor down until her lips brushed the matriarch’s ear, whispering words that made Eleanor’s blood freeze solid in her veins.
""It wasn't an accident... and Julian wasn't the one who struck me.""
