Chapter 12 - The Fall of the Prodigal

The blinding headlights of the cruiser illuminated the dock in chaotic, blinding white. Julian scrambled along the wet boards, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his terrified whimpers lost beneath the roar of the engine. Arthur swung his cane in fury, shouting orders over the storm, but the illusion of absolute control had shattered.
""Julian! Get to the boat!"" Arthur roared. ""Get the engines engaged!""
Julian didn't move toward the yacht. Driven by primal terror and wounded narcissism, he lunged instead toward Clara, his bloody fingers clawing at her throat. ""If I lose everything, you die with me!""
Clara fell backward onto the soaked wood, the breath driven from her lungs as Julian pinned her down, his hands closing around her windpipe. Eleanor rushed forward, grabbing Julian’s soaked hair, pulling with all her might, but Julian’s madness gave him unnatural strength.
""Die!"" Julian snarled, his eyes bulging. ""Die with your bastard!""
Clara’s hand found the fallen service weapon in the pooling rainwater beneath her. She didn't hesitate. She pressed the muzzle directly into Julian’s ribs and pulled the trigger.
The muffled blast echoed like a thunderclap against Julian’s chest.

Julian froze. His grip on Clara’s neck went slack. His eyes widened in profound, childlike shock as he looked down at the dark, blooming stain spreading across his tailored grey vest. He opened his mouth, a trickle of blood escaping his lips, whispering a single, broken word: ""Mother...""
He collapsed sideways, rolling off the edge of the wooden pier, hitting the churning black waters of the Atlantic with a heavy splash. The dark currents pulled him under instantly, his body swallowed by the tide.
