Chapter 14 - The New Dawn

The storm broke just as the sun began to bleed across the Atlantic horizon, painting the choppy gray water in shades of bruised peach and pale gold. Pier 44 was swarming with state troopers, federal agents, and forensic technicians.
Arthur Vance sat handcuffed in the back of an armored federal vehicle, his ebony cane broken in the evidence bin, his empire dismantled in the span of a single rainy night.
At the end of the dock, paramedics worked feverishly over Clara Thorne. They had stabilized Lucas Thorne, who was already sitting in the second ambulance with an oxygen mask, his eyes never leaving Clara’s gurney.
Dr. Evans had already been taken into custody at St. Jude's after federal agents raided his private office, uncovering the vials of synthetic toxins and the encrypted bank transfers linking him directly to Arthur's shell corporations.
Eleanor stood wrapped in a wool emergency blanket, watching as the divers combed the harbor floor for Julian’s body. There was no joy in her survival, only the profound, hollow ache of a mother who had watched her world burn down to the bedrock.
""Mrs. Vance?"" a female paramedic called out softly. ""She's asking for you before we transport her to the university hospital.""
Eleanor walked over to the back of the ambulance. Clara lay under heavy thermal blankets, her face bruised, her body battered, but her breathing was deep and rhythmic. She reached out from under the blanket and touched Eleanor’s sleeve.
""Why did you step in front of the gun?"" Clara whispered, her voice cracked with exhaustion. ""I came to destroy everything you built.""
Eleanor looked down at the young woman, then at the swelling belly that carried the final child of Thorne Shipping.
""You didn't destroy my family, Clara,"" Eleanor said quietly. ""We destroyed ourselves years ago. You just turned on the lights so we could see the rot.""
Clara squeezed Eleanor’s fingers weakly. ""The baby... she’s still fighting. The heartbeat is strong.""
""A girl?"" Eleanor asked, a faint, fragile breath escaping her lips.
May you like
""A girl,"" Clara nodded.
Eleanor leaned down and whispered, ""Then fight for her. Because tomorrow, the lawyers arrive. And this time, justice is going to have my signature on it.""
