Chapter 14 - The Final Betrayal

Julian felt something shatter completely within him—the final, fragile remnant of the man who had loved this woman. He stood frozen, staring down at the ghost that had haunted his nightmares for two long years.

""Lily is upstairs,"" Julian said, his voice flat, completely devoid of emotion.

Clara laughed—a dry, hacking cough that rattled in her chest. ""Lily... poor, stupid little girl. She was always too weak. Did she tell you where she put the key? Did she give it to you?""

""She thinks you're dead, Clara. She thinks you loved her.""

""I loved what she was worth,"" Clara spat, straining against the heavy iron chains that bound her wrists. ""Twenty million in foreign trusts, locked under her biological registry. I needed a child to trigger the inheritance clauses from Michael's family estate. And I needed you to legalize it. A respectable businessman. A grieving widower.""

Julian looked at her, truly looking at her for the first time. The beauty was gone, stripped away to reveal the cold, calculating parasite underneath. He had spent two years drowning in guilt, believing he had failed to protect her on that dark road, while she had been orchestrating a slaughter from the shadows.

""Michael is dead,"" Julian stated quietly.

Clara's eyes widened slightly, then hardened into icy hatred. ""Then Elena and I will split the accounts. Unlock these chains, Julian. We can make a deal. I'll sign over custody. You can keep the brat. Just give me the ledger.""

Julian didn't answer. He slowly holstered his weapon. He turned around, walking back toward the stone staircase.

""Julian!"" Clara screamed, the desperation finally cracking her voice as the chains rattled frantically against the granite wall. ""Don't you walk away from me! Julian! You owe me!""

He reached the top of the stairs, stepped through the frame, and pulled the heavy timber door shut.
