Chapter 15 - The Dawn of Truth

Julian stood in the quiet of the cabin. Elena looked up at him from the floor, her eyes searching his expression, searching for the broken man she expected to find.

Instead, she found a man carved entirely from stone.

Julian walked over to the hearth. He picked up the heavy iron poker resting beside the burning logs. Without a word, he levered the padlock back through the cellar latch, slid the iron poker through the heavy brass hasp, and bent the thick metal with a sharp, violent wrench, effectively sealing the door forever.

""What are you doing?"" Elena whispered, the first real note of terror creeping into her voice. ""You can't leave her down there!""

""I'm not leaving anyone down there,"" Julian said calmly, taking out his satellite phone. He dialed a direct line to the State Police commissioner—a man who owed his career to Julian’s family foundation.

""Arthur,"" Julian said into the receiver. ""I need an emergency tactical team and child protective services at the Blackwood cabin. I have Elena Vance in custody for kidnapping and extortion. And... you will find the remains of Clara Hall in the cellar.""

Elena screamed, thrashing against her restraints, but Julian didn't look at her again. He turned and walked out into the cool morning air.

The rain had stopped. The dense grey clouds were breaking over the mountain ridge, letting through the first warm rays of golden sunlight.

Julian walked to the truck. He opened the passenger door softly. Lily was awake now, sitting upright, clutching the oversized wool blanket around her small shoulders. Her eyes were clear, searching his face with quiet, cautious hope.

Julian climbed into the driver's seat, pulled her close to his side, and kissed the top of her head.

""Is it over, Daddy?"" she whispered against his chest.

Julian looked into the rearview mirror, watching the cabin slowly fade into the background as he put the truck into gear. For the first time in two years, the suffocating weight in his chest was gone.

""Yes, baby,"" Julian said softly, his voice finally breaking with warmth. ""We're going home."""
