Chapter 10 - Cornered in Concrete

The tires of Christian’s SUV screeched softly against the damp concrete of the underground garage beneath Victoria’s luxury apartment building. The space was cavernous, dimly lit by fluorescent tubes buzzing overhead.

Christian parked in a blind spot behind a pillar. Ahead, near a red sports car, stood Victoria. She was dressed in designer clothes, clutching a leather briefcase, pacing nervously while on her cell phone.

Elena stepped out of the vehicle first, Christian trailing two paces behind her like an executioner’s shadow.

""Looking for someone, Victoria?"" Elena’s voice cut through the damp air.

Victoria whipped around, the color draining instantly from her face. Her phone slipped from her fingers, clattering against the concrete. ""E-Elena? You’re... you're alive?""

""Disappointed?"" Elena asked, closing the distance between them.

Victoria stepped backward until her spine hit her car door. Her eyes darted wildly toward Christian, who stood with his arms crossed, blocking her only exit. ""Elena, listen to me! Richard forced me! He threatened my family if I didn't help him cut your dress, if I didn't transfer the funds—""

""Save it,"" Elena interrupted, her voice steady and ice-cold. ""Hand over the briefcase.""

Victoria hesitated, her expression contorting from faux innocence to vicious spite. ""You think you've won? Richard is meeting the board right now! Even if you have the files, Marcus has the military contractors on his payroll. You won't make it to the corporate tower alive!""

From the shadows behind Christian, the low rumble of an approaching engine echoed through the garage. A black heavy-duty pickup truck was speeding directly toward them with its high beams blindingly bright.
