Chapter 15 - The Unseen Sovereign

Christian picked up the phone, his brow furrowing as he read the decrypted text. The rare softness that had begun to form around his eyes vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, calculating warrior Elena had first met in the cathedral.

""What is it?"" Elena asked, sensing the sudden drop in temperature.

Christian turned the screen toward her. On it was a photograph taken ten minutes ago outside the federal penitentiary where Marcus and Richard were being held. A transport van was engulfed in flames, surrounded by emergency vehicles. Beneath the image was a single sentence:

The debts of the past are not settled in courtrooms. Welcome to the high table, Mr. and Mrs. Vance.

""Marcus didn't hire those contractors,"" Christian said, his voice deadly quiet. ""He didn't have the clearance or the capital. Someone far above the Sterlings funded this entire operation. Someone who wanted your father's shipping routes not for money, but for passage.""

Elena stared at the burning vehicle on the screen. The nightmare was supposed to be over. The betrayal in the cathedral was supposed to have been about Richard’s petty greed and Victoria’s jealousy. But looking at the smoking ruins of the transport van, she realized Richard had merely been the bait.

""Who are they?"" Elena asked, her voice steadying as she instinctively moved closer to Christian's side.

Christian slipped the phone back into his coat pocket, his hand brushing against hers. His fingers closed around hers, his grip unyielding and protective. He looked out over the endless expanse of the city, where countless unseen shadows moved beneath the neon lights.

""They call themselves the Sovereign Consortium,"" Christian said, his voice dark with impending war. ""And they made a fatal mistake.""

He looked down at her, his eyes blazing with lethal devotion.

""They gave me a reason to fight."""
