Chapter 11 - The Tower of Babel

The glass-and-steel needle of Vance Tower pierced the gray morning mist of downtown Seattle, towering seventy-five stories above Elliott Bay. At 5:00 AM, the financial district was a ghost town of wet asphalt, yellow streetlights, and swirling fog.
Clara parked the old pickup four blocks away in a subterranean public garage. Thomas leaned heavily against her as they walked through the shadows of the concrete alleyways. He had discarded his torn, bloodied suit jacket for an oversized canvas coat found in the truck, his face pale and feverish, but his right hand remained buried inside his pocket, gripping a snub-nosed revolver retrieved from Eleanor’s lockbox.
"Security will have biometric gates at the ground level," Thomas warned through clenched teeth, his breath misting in the cold air. "The moment you show your face at the turnstiles, the alarm will ping Sterling's console."
"That's the point," Clara replied calmly.
She had changed out of her torn clothes into a dark woolen trench coat and black boots from an all-night surplus store. Her copper-red hair was pulled tightly back into a functional knot at the base of her skull. Underneath her coat, the titanium drive rested against her chest like a talisman.
They entered the soaring, multi-story atrium of Vance Tower. The polished black granite floors reflected the cold halogen lights overhead. Behind the reinforced security desk sat two men wearing tactical black suits with small, silver lapel pins—the insignia of Sterling Global Security.
As Clara approached the turnstiles, both guards stood up, their hands dropping subtly toward their sidearms.
"Building is closed for private audit," the taller guard stated, his voice flat, emotionless. "State your business."
Clara stepped directly in front of the optical scanner mounted beside the brass turnstile. She didn't look at the guards. She stared directly into the glowing blue aperture.
BEEP.
A mechanical chime echoed through the vast atrium. The screen flashed bright crimson, followed by an emerald green banner:
PRIMARY BENEFICIARY DETECTED: CLARA VANCE. CLEARANCE: LEVEL ZERO OMEGA.
The heavy turnstile unlocked with a pneumatic hiss.
The guards froze, their hands hovering over their holstered weapons as their radio earpieces erupted with frantic chatter.
"Stand down," a voice crackled through their headsets loud enough for Clara to hear. "Send her to seventy-two. Mr. Sterling and Mrs. Mercer are waiting."
Clara turned back to Thomas. "Stay in the lobby. Keep the rear exit secured. If I'm not down in twenty minutes, use the dead-man switch on the server."
Thomas looked at her, his eyes hollow with pain and fear. "Clara... Eleanor never wanted you to be the one holding the blade."
"Eleanor is dead, Thomas," Clara said softly, stepping through the turnstile. "Someone has to collect her debts."
The express elevator doors slid shut with a silent, airtight glide. The digital floor indicator began its rapid climb: 10... 30... 50... 70... 72.
When the doors opened, Clara stepped out directly into Eleanor Vance’s executive penthouse. The walls were panoramic glass, offering a terrifying, god-like view of the dark waters of Puget Sound and the awakening city lights below.
Sitting behind Eleanor’s vast glass desk was Victoria Mercer, looking disheveled, her eyes rimmed with red, clutching a snifter of amber liquor with shaking hands. Standing behind her, looking out over the city with his hands clasped behind his back, was Victor Sterling.

On the desk between them lay a military-grade biometric terminal, its red retinal sensor blinking like a hungry eye.
"Welcome home, Clara," Victoria whispered, her voice laced with venom and desperate relief. "You're just in time to sign your inheritance away."
