Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The crystal chandelier hummed with quiet prestige above the grand ballroom of the Ashford Manor. Clara stood near the head table, her fingers clutching the folds of her pale pink silk dress. Her heart pounded heavily against her ribs, each beat sending a pulse of dull, throbbing agony across her swollen belly. She forced a practiced smile for the city elite who had gathered to celebrate the imminent birth of Julian Vance’s sole heir.

Julian stood across the room, champagne flute in hand, looking every bit the poised, benevolent billionaire politician the tabloids adored. His sharp blue eyes caught Clara’s. There was no warmth in them—only a cold, unyielding warning. Stay still. Look radiant. Be the perfect wife.

Clara took a careful, shallow breath, trying not to stretch the taut skin beneath her gown. Just hours before the gala, in the private suite upstairs, Julian had shown her what happened when she spoke to the wrong people. His strike had been calculated, landing where the silk could conceal the consequences, low and brutal.

A wave of dizziness washed over her. The room began to spin. The golden chandeliers tilted violently. She reached out blindly for the nearest table, her fingers brushing a silver fork, but her knees buckled.

The sound of shattering crystal echoed like a gunshot through the hall.

Clara crashed sideways onto the ornate floral carpet. Stems of delicate wine glasses broke beneath her hip, pooling red wine that looked sickeningly like blood across the tablecloth. The chatter died instantly. Hundreds of eyes locked onto her crumpled form.

"Clara!"

Eleanor Vance, Julian’s stately mother, was the first to rush forward. Her tailored navy blue suit swept the floor as she dropped to her knees. "Dear God, Clara, don't move! Someone call an ambulance!"

Clara groaned, clutching her stomach with trembling hands. "I'm... I'm fine, Eleanor, please—"

"You are not fine, you are in labor or bleeding!" Eleanor insisted, her matriarchal instincts overriding the rigid decorum she championed. Her hands frantically inspected Clara’s gown for tearing glass. Her fingers caught the soft hem of Clara's dress and yanked it upward to check for cuts.

The air froze.

There were no cuts from the crystal. But stretched across the crest of Clara’s eight-month pregnant belly was a horrific, blooming violence—a massive, purplish-black contusion surrounded by angry yellow mottling, shaped distinctly like a heavy fist.

Eleanor gasped, her jaw falling slack, her eyes widening in absolute horror. The room held its breath as Clara desperately tried to tug the fabric down, tears finally escaping her eyes.

From two tables away, Sheriff Mark Callahan slowly stood up. His weathered face went pale, then iron-hard, his hand instinctively dropping toward his service belt.

Julian, still holding his champagne flute, took one rigid step forward, his smile completely vanished.
