Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The recovery room was dim, illuminated only by the rhythmic, luminous green trace of the heart monitor. The smell of antiseptic and surgical iodine hung heavy in the air.
Callahan stepped inside, closing the heavy wooden door behind him, leaving Julian raging silently behind two armed deputies in the hallway.
Clara looked fragile beneath the hospital blankets, her face drained of all color, her lips chapped and pale. An IV drip was tapped into her bruised wrist. When she heard Callahan’s boots, her eyes fluttered open.
"Sheriff..." she whispered, her voice barely louder than the hum of the monitors.
Callahan pulled a plastic chair close to the bed and sat down, removing his uniform hat and setting it on his knee. He leaned in close. "I'm here, Clara. The baby is safe. He's in the NICU, breathing on his own. A healthy boy."
Tears spilled over Clara’s temples, soaking into her hair. A fragile smile touched her lips, but it faded quickly, replaced by raw terror. "Julian... Julian's outside, isn't he?"
"He is. He has lawyers and a court order trying to take you to his private clinic." Callahan leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a fierce, protective murmur. "Clara, I saw the mark. That wasn't a fall. A fall doesn't leave bruised knuckles across your abdomen. I can protect you, but I need you to tell me the truth. Did Julian do this to you?"
Clara began to tremble, her breathing turning shallow. Her eyes darted around the ceiling, as if expecting hidden cameras in the vents. "You don't know what he's capable of, Mark. He owns this town. He owns the judges, the district attorney... even your deputies."
"He doesn't own me," Callahan said firmly. "I gave your father a promise before he passed away that I'd look out for you. I failed to see what was happening behind those iron gates, but I won't fail you tonight. Give me the word, and I will put him in handcuffs before sunrise."
Clara shook her head weakly. "Handcuffs won't hold him. His lawyers will have him out on bail in an hour, and then... then he will take my baby. He only married me because of my family's land trust. He only needed a child to unlock the deeds."
She struggled to lift her right hand, reaching weakly beneath the pillow.
"Clara, don't strain yourself—"
"Listen to me," she gasped, her fingers brushing against Callahan's rough wrist. She pressed something small, cold, and metallic into his palm.

Callahan looked down. It was a miniature, high-grade micro-SD card, encased in a waterproof silver capsule.
"In the master study... behind the antique grandfather clock," Clara whispered, her pulse monitor beeping faster. "A hidden safe. The code is my mother's birthday: 0-4-1-2. That card has the encryption key. It has everything, Mark. The offshore accounts, the bribes... and the video of what he did to me last month. But you have to hurry. Julian's men are going to burn the house."
