Chapter 2 - The Sheriff's Shadow

The ballroom was an amphitheater of horrified silence. The dark, mottled bruise seemed to pulse under the harsh ballroom lights, impossible to ignore, impossible to excuse.

"Don't touch me..." Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she pressed her forehead against the cool carpet. The physical pain was sharp, but the humiliation was absolute. She had kept the secret behind reinforced gates and NDAs for two years, and now it was laid bare before every senator, judge, and patron in the state.

Eleanor remained frozen on her knees, her manicured fingers suspended in mid-air. She looked up slowly at Julian, who was advancing through the crowd. His expression was a masterclass in swift political maneuvering; the cold predator had vanished, replaced in an instant by the terrified, devoted husband.

"Clara! Baby, what happened?" Julian cried out, rushing past the frozen guests. He dropped to his knees, immediately pulling Clara’s gown down to cover her stomach, his hands frantic, wrapping his jacket around her trembling shoulders. "Did you fall on the terrace stairs earlier? I told you to rest! Why didn't you let Dr. Hayes examine you?"

It was brilliant. Seamless. In five seconds, Julian had offered the room an explanation: a tragic, clumsy fall, hidden by a stubborn mother-to-be.

Guests began to murmur in pity. "Oh, the poor thing." "She hid a fall?" "Julian must be terrified."

Only one man didn't buy the theater.

Sheriff Mark Callahan’s heavy boots clicked against the hardwood bordering the carpet as he approached. His broad shoulders cut through the circle of onlookers. He had seen enough domestic crime scenes in his twenty-five years on the force to know that a fall down carpeted stairs did not leave a centralized, knuckle-shaped hematoma on the abdomen.

"Step back, Julian," Callahan said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that cut through Julian’s theatrics.

Julian didn't look up, keeping his arms tightly wrapped around Clara—tight enough that Clara could feel his fingers digging into her collarbone, a silent threat. "I'm taking care of my wife, Sheriff. The private medics are already outside."

"I said, step back," Callahan repeated, placing a heavy hand on Julian’s shoulder.

Julian stiffened. He slowly turned his head, his aristocratic features hardening. "Do not touch me, Mark. Know your place."

Clara whimpered, the baby kicking violently against the trauma. Eleanor, still pale, stood up slowly. "Mark... please. Just get the paramedics. The baby..."

"The county ambulance is already pulling up," Callahan replied, his eyes never leaving Julian’s. "And Clara is going to St. Jude’s Memorial. Not to your private clinic."

Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits. "She goes where I say she goes."

Before Callahan could counter, Clara let out a stifled, ragged scream, her hand gripping Callahan’s trouser leg. A dark, warm stain began spreading across the pale pink skirt.
